Donald Trump’s Twitter lies and attacks don’t just embarrass the country and distract us from more important issues. According to a former Defense Secretary, they’re also putting our country at risk.
Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta spoke about Trump’s latest Twitter storm on CBS’ Face The Nation this past Sunday. Panetta pointed out that Trump’s temper tantrums put the nation at risk.
“Every time these things happen, every time he tweets, every time these issues come up that indicate that there’s obviously something to this Russian issue and the administration is not cooperating,” Panetta said. “When that happens, when he accuses a past president of wiretapping without any evidence of that being the case, it makes us vulnerable.”
Panetta then continued, “It weakens the United States and it makes us vulnerable to our enemies. That’s the danger.”
People in other countries are worried about Trump. They don’t know what to make of this new administration and all its antics.
Trump’s latest Twitter outburst isn’t helping either. Over the weekend he accused former President Obama of illegally wiretapping Trump Tower during the election.
Now Trump wants an investigation into the alleged scandal. This is in spite of the fact that the FBI says there’s no evidence that Obama ever ordered these wiretaps.
These false claims hurt Obama’s reputation as president. They also damage the integrity of the office of the president.
Trump made these claims without any evidence, and in spite of the fact that it’s illegal for presidents to unilaterally order wiretaps. The Twitter posts show that Trump doesn’t understand the law or know that he’s talking about.
Other world leaders don’t know what to make of Trump. He regularly attacks US allies, like Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of Australia.
On the other hand, he’s been very cozy with American enemy Vladimir Putin. Trump says he wants to improve relations with Russia and work with Putin more closely.
This has most of the rest of the world worried about what to expect from the volatile Trump. According to Panetta, “They’re concerned about whether he truly is going to be committed to the kind of world leadership that we’ve seen the United States provide.”
The problem is that Trump isn’t providing world leadership. He’s trying to bully the rest of the world into doing what he wants.
He continues to spread unsubstantiated lies on social media. It’s gotten to the point that almost no one believes anything Trump says anymore.
Trump’s ties with Russia undermine what little credibility he had with the rest of the world. He continues to argue with the US intelligence agencies about Russia’s role in the last election.
Trump has called our intelligence community incompetent and liars. As a result, his tirades damage their credibility around the world.
Trump is hurting our democracy and makes us look bad to our allies. The world needs true leadership, not Trump’s name-calling and scape-goating.
