Sleep, Vitamin C, hydration for migraine

You can take note using an app migraine tracker of when your migraines happen, how long they last, and where the pain is. You can also mark down how much sleep, exercise, and water you had before the migraine started.

When you are younger, it happens with lack of sleep and nutrition.

When older, it is related to other body issues and other toxins.

When terminally ill, it is cancer growing.

Sleep, vitamin C, calcium with magnesium at night, melatonin and detoxing with probiotics, greens, avoidance of red meat and getting adequate sunshine can help.

Corn silk (Zea mays)

Corn silk is the waste material from corn cultivation. Countries from China to France use this as a traditional medicine for many ailments, including bedwetting and bladder irritation. It may help with strengthening and restoring mucous membranes in the urinary tract to prevent incontinence, according to the International Continence Society.

Capsaicin

Capsaicin is found in the fleshy part of Chile peppers, not the seeds. It’s commonly used to treat pelvic pain syndrome, which is often a symptom of OAB. StudiesTrusted Source have found that peak bladder capacity increased from 106 milliliters to 302 milliliters.

Do Parkinson’s Medications Affect Sleep?

Do Parkinson’s Medications Affect Sleep?
Some PD meds, like MAO-B inhibitors (selegiline, rasagiline, safanimide) and amantadine (a medication used to treat dyskinesia), have alerting properties and may make insomnia worse. These medications are usually taken earlier in the day, so they do not impact sleep. Sinemet does not usually have a big impact on sleep compared to dopamine agonists.

However, nighttime hallucinations can emerge with increased intake of dopaminergic drugs, especially in people with more advanced Parkinson’s.
There are other possible causes of hallucinations, so if you begin to experience this, talk to your doctor right away. For more information, get your free copy of the Parkinson’s Foundation book Psychosis by calling Helpline at 1-800-4PD-INFO (473-4636) or online at Parkinson.org/books.

Sleep hygiene refers to the behaviors and habits that we can control that affect our bodies day-night cycling and readiness to go to sleep or be alert at a given time of day. Follow these tips for better sleeping habits:

  1. It is especially important for individuals with sleep difficulties to set and follow regular bed/sleep and wake times with a goal of spending at least 7 but not much more than 8 hours in bed each night. Bedtimes should be chosen based on a target waking time (i.e. don’t go to bed at 8 pm if you don’t want to be up at 4 am!).
  2. The bed should be used only as a place of sleeping, reading and watching television should be done elsewhere.
  3. Daytime napping should be limited to one nap of no greater than 30 minutes, as longer naps do not seem to provide any greater benefit to daytime fatigue but do disrupt sleep drive for the coming night.
  4. Lastly it is vital that persons with these sleep disorders are exposed to as much light (preferably real daylight) and physical/mental stimulation during the day as possible. Light is an important synchronizer of the sleep-wake cycle and many elderly individuals and individuals with chronic illness have reduced exposure to bright light.

Physical and mental activity stimulates the alerting and wakefulness centers in the brain and increase blood and oxygen flow to the brain. Most importantly, maintaining good sleep and wake habits can improve many sleep issues without the need of medications.

Dementia, vascular dementia and Alzheimer

Dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment. These terms are often mentioned together to describe age-related memory loss. While they are linked in some ways, they are not necessarily the same, and they often affect people differently.

“Even though memory loss is more common as you age, it is not part of normal aging,” says Dr. Gad Marshall, associate medical director of the Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. “Either sudden or gradual persistent changes in memory loss and mental lapses can be signs of more serious conditions.”

While there is no cure for most conditions that cause cognitive decline, recognizing key symptoms can provide a window of opportunity to seek medical care before any memory loss worsens. “It also can help you and your loved ones better understand what you may be facing,” says Dr. Marshall.

The two broad categories of cognitive decline are mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. While people with MCI have a greater-than-average risk of developing dementia, for many the symptoms remain stable and don’t progress. Once people have dementia, it almost always gets worse. Here is a look at both.

Mild cognitive impairment

MCI means a person has more than the usual minor cognitive decline that comes with aging. Up to 20% of adults older than 65 have the condition, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

There are two types of MCI. The first, amnestic MCI, refers to memory problems such as frequently misplacing everyday items like your glasses or quickly forgetting recently learned information.

The second category, nonamnestic MCI, involves changes in areas other than memory — for example, difficulty with attention and concentration, planning, and navigation skills.

People have trouble recognizing MCI because they chalk up their mental lapses as “senior moments” and the fact they can still do many daily routines.

“MCI tends to be a gradual condition, and symptoms may linger for three to five years before they might get worse or progress to dementia,” says Dr. Marshall. “Also, if you’re diagnosed with MCI, that doesn’t mean you’re on the fast track to dementia or have Alzheimer’s disease as the underlying cause of your symptoms.”

Dementia

Dementia is not a specific disease, but rather a syndrome caused by one or more disorders that affect the brain.

Memory loss is the most common symptom, but people also can experience problems with language, have difficulty solving problems, undergo personality and behavior changes, and struggle with activities of daily living, such as dressing and feeding oneself. About 90% of dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, or some combination of the two.

Alzheimer’s disease. People with Alzheimer’s have trouble remembering names, people, and recent events, and the symptoms get worse over time. They may eventually have trouble speaking, reading, or writing, and forget how to do routine tasks like brushing their teeth. They also may become anxious, depressed, or aggressive.

Researchers believe that two changes in the brain are main contributors to Alzheimer’s: tau protein tangles and beta-amyloid plaque buildup.

Tau is a normal protein and works to transport nutrients into and move waste out of brain cells. However, sometimes tau becomes abnormal through errant genes or aging, which causes pieces of the protein to “tangle” and clump together. When this happens, nutrients and toxins can no longer move freely within the cells. The result: brain cells eventually die. The tangles often form in the regions used for memory, but soon spread across the rest of the brain.

Beta-amyloid is a protein fragment found in the fatty membrane surrounding brain cells. When beta-amyloid clumps together, it forms plaque in the brain, high amounts of which are associated with brain cell death.

However, tau protein tangles and beta-amyloid plaque buildup can occur without any signs of memory problems. “These individuals are at a greater risk for developing symptoms of Alzheimer’s, but do not necessarily go on to do so,” says Dr. Marshall.

Vascular dementia. With vascular dementia, the other main form of dementia, memory problems result from blockages caused by the buildup of cholesterol plaque in the brain’s blood vessels. The blockages can cut off oxygen delivery to brain cells, which kills them.

Blockages in small blood vessels can lead to a series of minor strokes. The symptoms are often ignored since they mimic “senior moments,” like forgetting a name or just-learned information. “About 25% of dementia cases are due to vascular dementia alone or in combination with other causes,” says Dr. Marshall. “Early on, the brain damage can be minor, causing subtle symptoms that aren’t noticed initially.”

Ultra processed foods bad for health

Another problem with ultra-processed foods is that people tend to overeat them, and thus gain weight. A recent study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found that subjects who ate an ultra-processed diet ate about 500 calories more per day than those whose diet was rich in whole foods.

“These foods are often filled with added sugars, salt, refined carbohydrates and fat,” says David Katz, director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in Derby, Conn. “The study itself found that people who ate ultra-processed foods tend to eat them faster and that they had lower levels of appetite-suppressing hormones than those who ate whole foods. As a result, they may have ended up eating more in order to feel satisfied.”

Sitting beside a 91 who only have 2 meds for arthritis and hypertension, I can see that she has gained weight from prolonged sitting and is lacking in sunshine.  As I massage her back and coach her about how we get to accumulate toxins over time even when we are vegetarian, she was listening intently.

In the bay area, clean water and foods laden with pesticides and chemicals are an issue.  We have more breast cancer rates compared to other states. Many years ago, we manufacture computer parts and PCBs can seep into our water ways.

I visited another house with a 67 yr old client with Parkinsons. As I massage her stomach and legs, I can feel her anxiety and tensed muscles. She does not sleep well and is also not using filtered water.  She eats left over foods and is also not getting enough sunshine.

Lack of magnesium can cause so many diseases

The scope of pathologies related with lack of Magnesium is huge: hypertension (cardiovascular ailment, kidney and liver harm, and so forth.), peroxynitrite damage (headache, various sclerosis, glaucoma, Alzheimer’s illness, and so on.), repetitive bacterial infection because of low levels of nitric oxide in the cavities (sinuses, vagina, center ear, lungs, throat, and so on.), fungal infections because of a depressed immune system, thiamine deactivation (low gastric behavioral disorders, and so on.), premenstrual syndrome, Calcium inadequacy (osteoporosis, hypertension, state of mind swings, and so forth.), tooth cavities, loss of hearing, diabetes type II, cramps, muscle weakening, impotence (absence of NO), hostility (absence of NO), fibromas, potassium deficiency (arrhythmia, hypertension, a few types of cancer), iron accumulation, and so on.

Parasites and suicides

Inflammation in the Brain

Lena Brundin, of Michigan State University, co-led the new study. She told the press that between one in ten and one in five people in the US carry the parasite, and while it was thought to lie dormant, it in fact appears to cause inflammation that produces metabolites that accumulate over time and can harm the brain.

“Previous research has found signs of inflammation in the brains of suicide victims and people battling depression, and there also are previous reports linking Toxoplasma gondii to suicide attempts,” said Brundin, an associate professor of experimental psychiatry in the College of Human Medicine at MSU.

For example, last month saw the publication of a study that linked higher suicide risk in new mothers to T. gondii.

What the New Study Found

The study is the first to use a suicide assessment scale to assess risk in people infected with the parasite, including 54 who had attempted suicide and 30 controls. All patients were adults and were recruited between 2006 and 2010, and were tested for signs of the parasite. The 54 who had attempted suicide were inpatients at Lund University Hospital in Sweden, and the controls were randomly selected from the municipal population register in Lund.

The results showed testing positive for the parasite was significantly tied to higher scores on the scale, which would indicate a higher risk of a future suicide attempt.

“… we found that if you are positive for the parasite, you are seven times more likely to attempt suicide,” said Brundin.

However, Brundin emphasized that most people infected with the parasite are unlikely to attempt suicide:

“Some individuals may for some reason be more susceptible to develop symptoms,” she explained.

Toxoplasma gondii – parasitic infection was related to anxiety disorders

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most common parasites in humans, affecting as much as one-third of the world’s population. Individuals can become infected with this parasite in several ways, such as by eating undercooked meat, drinking unpasteurized milk, or eating raw fruits and vegetables. In addition, the Toxoplasma gondii’s eggs are present in cat feces, and one of the most common way people are infected with Toxoplasma gondii is through contact with an infected cat.

In individuals with a weakened immune system (such as infants or those with HIV/AIDS), the Toxoplasma gondii parasite can cause serious, and even fatal, illness. Because of this, experts recommend that pregnant women do not clean a cat’s litter box.

A study published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity investigated whether a past history of Toxoplasma gondii infection was related to anxiety disorders, which affect about 6% of individuals sometime during their lifetime. The Toxoplasma gondii parasite has been linked to several mental disorders, but no past research has examined whether this parasite is implicated in anxiety disorders.
