Rental assistance (Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher) programs are administered locally by housing agencies. Please contact the housing agency/authority in your area to place an application. Please be aware that many of them have long waiting lists or are not taking applications. The public housing agencies are listed on the website:

For HUD Subsidized Apartments, go to http://www.hud.gov . Select a state in drop down menu and click it. Click on “Get Rental Help” on the left under “I Want to.” Under “Subsidized Apartments”, click the “Search for a subsidized apartment” link. Select one or more of the pieces of information provided (like elderly or disabled) and it will show available HUD-subsidized apartments and information about them. You will need contact the resident manager directly to find out the availability information, eligibility requirements and application procedures.

Go to the HUD website (http://www.hud.gov) and click on “Find Rental Assistance” on the left under I Want to. Pay particular attention to where we describe the various kinds of rental programs that HUD funds and how to apply.
- Contact one of the HUD-approved housing counseling agencies listed on that page. They can help you sort through your options.
- Call your local government (your office of housing and community development or your mayor’s office) to see if there are any local rental programs that might be right for you.

Please contact a housing counseling agency. Go to the HUD website (http://www.hud.gov). Click A-Z near the top right. Click the link for housing counseling then contact one of the local HUD-approved housing counseling agencies through that page or call (800) 569-4287. It is a great place to start. They can speak with you and assist you personally.

Many of them have toll free numbers and most have email addresses listed so you could begin with the ones closest to you and call ones a bit further away until contact one that is able to assist you right away. At the bottom of that page it provides a search with choices to help you narrow it down.
