Consumers in health care need technology

I attended dinner last night as sponsored by Startup Health and GE Health Care. I chatted with Health IT professionals and health IT innovators trying to connect for collaboration. Some are big players and others like me are just entering into the game of helping health care consumers navigate through the many health IT innovations and more to come.

Health care consumers need technology and technology needs health care consumers input to get them engaged to solve their problems in an efficient manner with few paperwork.  My visiting nurse friend complaints of the many paper work that takes more than 40min of her time.

My goal is not to duplicate what others have created already but integrate them to benefit the health care consumers.

Doctors and hospitals know that a value-based payment models recognize the importance of data liquidity and access to quality information to better inform timely clinical decision-making. It also makes stakeholders more accountable and encourages patient engagement—opening up opportunities for innovators in digital health. The overall result? Improved outcomes, lower costs and increased patient satisfaction powered by innovation.

Patient generated health data have to be integrated to the hospital data. Many nurses believe that there are still many health IT gaps that should be closed to help them better serve their patients.

The FDA should encourage innovation and they do so that they do not require extensive documentation requirements when there is no diagnosis and only data storage while still complying with data privacy and HIPAA.

PHI: Protected Health information: Protected health information is information of a patients who is in a health system for previous care and needs. Their information is protected by law and should be private from anyone besides the health facilities qualified health professional who have consent on file to keep patients information private. Some examples are patients demographics, care, and treatments administered.

Patient privacy is very important because it protects patients information from anyone other than health professionals who have not been consented to know their information. HIPAA is the law that protect these patients information.

HIPAA is an Act To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to improve portability and continuity of health insurance coverage in the group and individual markets, to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in health insurance and health care delivery, to promote the use of medical savings accounts, to improve access to long-term care services and coverage, to simplify the administration of health insurance, and for other purposes.

The HIPAA Privacy regulations require health care providers and organizations, as well as their business associates, develop and follow procedures that ensure the confidentiality and security of protected health information (PHI) when it is transferred, received, handled, or shared”(dhcs.ca.gov).
