Does childbirth ruin a woman’s mental state?

My answer to Does childbirth ruin a woman's mental state?

Answer by Connie b. Dellobuono:

No. The sudden drop in hormones after childbirth greatly influences a mother’s mental state. But the mothering instinct, bonding with baby, where baby is placed in mom’s chest after birth and breastfed successfully are positive energies for a new mom. In other parts of the world, the new mom is surrounded by many women. In the USA, a new mom is by herself.

The unnecessary medical intervention during labor and birth in the hospital will affect the new mother’s sexual function and body and the bonding with the baby (esp if new baby is separated from the mother).

Support system is important from the midwives and nurses teaching new moms how to breastfeed and care for their body and the baby.

Sometimes, the new mom is so attached to the midwives or doctors or nurses who helped her during the most laborious work ever, childbirth.

What a new mom needs is whole foods (clam chowder soup with ginger and spinach), rest, support and understanding. In the USA, 2 months is the allowed rest for a working new mom while in Europe, it is 6 months. In the bay area, new mothers cannot afford to stay at home for the first 3 years of baby’s life because of expensive housing.
