What is a weak gene?

weak gene.JPG

Genetic variability (vary + liable – to or capable of change) is the ability, i.e. capability of a biological system – individual and population – that is changing over time. The base of the genetic variability is genetic variation of different biological systems in space.[1][2][3]

Genetic variability is a measure of the tendency of individual genotypes in a population to vary from one another, also. Variability is different from genetic diversity, which is the amount of variation seen in a particular population.[4] The variability of a trait describes how much that trait tends to vary in response to environmental andgenetic influences.[4] Genetic variability in a population is important for biodiversity,[5] because without variability, it becomes difficult for a population to adapt to environmental changes and therefore makes it more prone to extinction.

Variability is an important factor in evolution as it affects an individual’s response to environmental stress and thus can lead to differential survival of organisms within a population due to natural selection of the most fit variants. Genetic variability also underlies the differential susceptibility of organisms to diseases and sensitivity to toxins or drugs — a fact that has driven increased interest in personalized medicine given the rise of the human genome project and efforts to map the extent of human genetic variation such as the HapMap project.

I’m fifteen and I have anxiety and depression. CBT doesn’t seem to work, do the cons really outweigh the pros on anti-depressants?

Connie b. Dellobuono

Meta analyses of short duration randomized clinical trials have found that SSRI use is related to a higher risk of suicidal behavior in children and adolescents.

For instance, a 2004 U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) analysis of clinical trials on children with major depressive disorder found statistically significant increases of the risks of “possible suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior” by about 80%, and of agitation and hostility by about 130%.

According to the FDA, the heightened risk of suicidality is within the first one to two months of treatment.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) places the excess risk in the “early stages of treatment”.

The European Psychiatric Association places the excess risk in the first two weeks of treatment and, based on a combination of epidemiological, prospective cohort, medical claims, and randomized clinical trial data, concludes that a protective effect dominates after this early period. A 2012 Cochrane review found that at six to nine months, suicidal ideation remained higher in children treated with antidepressants compared to those treated with psychological therapy.

A recent comparison of aggression and hostility occurring during treatment with fluoxetine to placebo in children and adolescents found that no significant difference between the fluoxetine group and a placebo group.

There is also evidence that higher rates of SSRI prescriptions are associated with lower rates of suicide in children, though since the evidence is correlational, the true nature of the relationship is unclear.

In 2004, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in theUnited Kingdom judged fluoxetine (Prozac) to be the only antidepressant that offered a favorable risk-benefit ratio in children with depression, though it was also associated with a slight increase in the risk of self-harm and suicidal ideation.

Only two SSRIs are licensed for use with children in the UK, sertraline (Zoloft) andfluvoxamine (Luvox), and only for the treatment of obsessive–compulsive disorder. Fluoxetine is not licensed for this use.

The SSRIs, in decreasing toxicity in overdose, can be listed as follows:

  • Citalopram (due to the potential for QT interval prolongation)
  • Fluvoxamine
  • Escitalopram
  • Paroxetine
  • Sertraline
  • Fluoxetine

Antidepressants May Increase Your Risk of Bipolar Disorder

If you’re considering the use of antidepressants, it’s probably because you want to feelbetter. However, antidepressants called serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may leave you with a new set of mental challenges, specifically symptoms of mania or bipolar disorder.

SSRIs include drugs such as Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa and Lexapro. Researchers from King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience reviewed more than 21,000 medical records for the recently published study.

Antidepressants During Pregnancy Linked to Autism

It’s estimated that 14 percent of U.S. pregnant women use antidepressants, often after being assured they are safe. But a growing collection of research suggests serious caution is warranted.

Most recently, a JAMA Pediatrics study concluded that use of antidepressants, specifically SSRIs, during the second and/or third trimester increases the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, even after considering maternal depression.

Antidepressant Use During Pregnancy Linked to ADHD and Birth Defects

It’s not only a potentially increased risk of autism that should prompt women who may become pregnant, and those who already are, to carefully consider the use of antidepressants.

Research shows taking SSRIs when you’re pregnant may increase the risks of low birth weight, preterm birth, fetal death, infant death, neonatal seizures, and the need for mechanical ventilation.

SSRI Stories: Antidepressant Nightmares

The potential side effects of antidepressants stretch far and wide. For instance, research suggests taking an SSRI may double your risk of bone fractures.

This is because serotonin is also involved in the physiology of bone.

If you alter serotonin levels with a drug, it can result in low bone density, boosting fracture risk. A large study of post-menopausal women also found that those taking tricyclic antidepressants or SSRIs were 45 percent more likely to suffer a fatal stroke.

The research also found that overall death rates were 32 percent higher in women on the drugs, while other research linked antidepressant use to thicker arteries, which could contribute to the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Among the most concerning side effects, however, especially to society as a whole, are suicidal thoughts and violent behavior.

Non-Drug Options for Treating Depression

Research confirms that there are safe and effective ways to address depression that donot involve unsafe drugs. This includes addressing your gut health, as mentioned above, and more:

  • Dramatically decrease your consumption of sugar (particularly fructose), grains, and processed foods. (In addition to being high in sugar and grains, processed foods also contain a variety of additives that can affect your brain function and mental state, especially MSG and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.)
  • Increase consumption of probiotic foods, such as fermented vegetables and kefir, to promote healthy gut flora. Mounting evidence tells us that having a healthy gut is profoundly important for both physical and mental health, and the latter can be severely impacted by an imbalance of intestinal bacteria. Avoiding sugar will also help toward this end.
  • Get adequate vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 deficiency can contribute to depression and affects one in four people.
  • Optimize your vitamin D levels
    mercola.com

, ideally through regular sun exposure. Vitamin D is very important for your mood. In one study, people with the lowest levels of vitamin D were found to be 11 times more prone to depression than those who had normal levels.29

  • Get plenty of animal-based omega-3 fats. Many people don’t realize that their brain is 60 percent fat, but not just any fat. It is DHA, an animal-based omega-3 fat, which, along with EPA, is crucial for good brain function and mental health.30
  • Evaluate your salt intake. Sodium deficiency actually creates symptoms that are very much like those of depression. Make sure you do not use processed salt (regular table salt), however. You’ll want to use an all-natural, unprocessed salt like Himalayan salt, which contains more than 80 different micronutrients.
  • Get adequate daily exercise, including high-intensity exercise, which is one of the most effective strategies for preventing and overcoming depression. Studies on exercise as a treatment for depression have shown there is a strong.
  • Sleep, volunteer, eat sulfur rich whole foods (yellow colored, garlic, yams)

Can cervical cancer be prevented?

cerv.JPG

Cancer is caused by

Cancer is caused by changes in the DNA of our genome. These changes can sometimes affect how our genes work. If the change happens in the wrong gene (called an oncogene), then you might get cancer.

These changes can be caused by UV light from the sun or chemicals in the environment. Sometimes our cells cause changes in our own DNA on accident. This can happen whenever a cell copies its DNA and divides.

Luckily our cells have ways to protect against DNA damage. Most of the time a cell can repair the damage. And if it can’t, then the cell commits suicide (called apoptosis). This helps prevent damaged cells from multiplying and possibly leading to cancer.

Some forms of E6 and E7 keep these damaged cells from committing suicide. So these cells keep building up mutations until they grow uncontrollably and will not die. This is the definition of a cancer cell.

Cancers can be caused by DNA mutations (gene defects) that turn on oncogenes or turn off tumor suppressor genes. … Most women with HPV don’t get cervical cancer, and certain other risk factors, like smoking and HIV infection, influence which women exposed to HPV are more likely to develop cervical cancer.

Do we know what causes cervical cancer?

In recent years, scientists have made much progress toward understanding what happens in cells of the cervix when cancer develops. In addition, they have identified several risk factors that increase the odds that a woman might develop cervical cancer (see the previous section).

The development of normal human cells mostly depends on the information contained in the cells’ chromosomes. Chromosomes are large molecules of DNA. DNA is the chemical that carries the instructions for nearly everything our cells do. We usually look like our parents because they are the source of our DNA. However, DNA affects more than the way we look.

Some genes (packets of our DNA) have instructions for controlling when our cells grow and divide. Certain genes that promote cell division are called oncogenes. Others that slow down cell division or cause cells to die at the right time are called tumor suppressor genes. Cancers can be caused by DNA mutations (gene defects) that turn on oncogenes or turn off tumor suppressor genes.

HPV causes the production of 2 proteins known as E6 and E7 which turn off some tumor suppressor genes. This may allow the cervical lining cells to grow too much and to develop changes in additional genes, which in some cases will lead to cancer.

But HPV does not completely explain what causes cervical cancer. Most women with HPV don’t get cervical cancer, and certain other risk factors, like smoking and HIV infection, influence which women exposed to HPV are more likely to develop cervical cancer.

Not all HPV is Created Equal

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection. About 75-80% of people will get HPV before the age of 50 and over 20 million women in the U.S. alone are infected. Luckily though, most of these cases won’t go on to cause the cancer.

See, there are tons of HPVs and not all of them cause cervical cancer. In fact, most people with HPV do not develop any symptoms or health problems at all. In 90% of cases, the body’s immune system fights off HPV naturally within two years.

Sometimes though, the virus can survive in a woman for years. If it can do so for 15 or 20 years, then it can sometimes convert normal cells on the surface of the cervix into cancerous ones.

This is why some types of HPV viruses are called high-risk, oncogenic, or carcinogenic. These include HPV types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, and 73. That’s a whole lot of numbers. What’s the different between these and the low-risk group?

The answer is in the HPV genome. A genome is almost always made of DNA and contains all the genetic information necessary to make a living thing. So a viral genome contains all the instructions needed to make new viruses.

Just like individual people can have slightly different genomes, so too can different HPVs. In virology, these different types are called strains.

A viral genome is much simpler than a human one. A virus really just needs to make copies of itself that can go on to infect more people. This takes very few instructions.

The genome of an HPV has six early (E) genes that help control the virus genes and how they behave in cells. They also have two late (L) genes with the instructions for the shell of the virus. And part of the genome helps control when these various genes are turned on as well.

The two most important HPV genes in the development of cancer are E6 and E7. Both of these genes need to be on all the time in order for cancer to develop.

How Jill healed cervical cancer naturally nearly 40 years ago!

By Jill Schneider

In February, 1975, I was diagnosed with malignant cervical cancer. I had no pain or other symptoms, and would not have had any idea I was sick if the cancer had not shown up on my annual Pap test, which had come back from the lab marked “Class Five: conclusive for malignancy.” I received the news from a concerned receptionist at my gynecologist’s office, who said I should come in and have another test taken so they could double-check the results. I did, and spent the next few days wondering whether I would die, or ever be able to have children. And then the same results came back.

It’s funny. There I was, young and seemingly healthy, listening to my doctor describe something hidden within my own body that had the power to kill me – or at the very least to substantially change me. He described all the options at my disposal, invasive procedures every one, starting with what’s called a conization, in which a cone-shaped section of my cervix would be cut out, hopefully taking all the cancerous tissue along with it. But that might not be enough, he told me. I might still need a hysterectomy – the removal of my cervix and uterus, and perhaps my ovaries as well.

As I thought about what my doctor said, I became convinced that the line of treatment he outlined was all wrong for me. It seemed painful, complicated, and disharmonious with nature.

I started feeling that I am not my body – and that ultimately, my life was in God’s hands. There was a part of me that said, “Thank you, God, for giving me this experience. My body is a channel through which I experience this life.” But there was another part of me that had a keen desire to live a long and healthy life. I was not going to let anything or anyone take away my potential for motherhood.

At that time in my life, I learned how to meditate. Through meditation, I’d developed a very strong center, and there weren’t many things that could shake me up. Two years earlier, I had spent a few months in India with my Master, Prem Rawat.  After I returned from the East, I had moved into an ashram, a place to practice The Knowledge and be around other committed and conscious people. I was a vegetarian, dabbled in Hatha Yoga, and was curious about Eastern philosophy and medicine. I had come to believe that with any disease; just treating the symptom isn’t enough. The imbalance that created it will just find new territory to invade and destroy. Thus, I believed that the Pap test was telling me something: I felt that there was stagnation and a depression within my reproductive system. Cleansing and rejuvenating the area through natural means made unqualified sense to me. Before I tried anything invasive, like surgery, I had to give my body a chance to respond to non-invasive, natural methods.

This was many years ago, but I still remember with remarkable clarity how I felt when I was trying to explain this to my doctor. My heart was beating a mile a minute as I asked him whether I could give natural methods a try for a month and be retested then. He just looked at me and said, “Jill, I don’t think we can work with you anymore. We really want you in the hospital this week.”

I left the gynecologist’s office shaken. I felt like a child who had defied the school principal and gotten expelled. I’d never challenged an authority figure before; I’d always been a basically obedient, law-abiding person. I was disheartened, but I had to do what I believed was right.

acu.JPG

At the time, I was taking a course called “The Theory of Oriental Medicine” with Ralph Alan Dale, Ph.D., an acupuncturist and author of Acupuncture With Your Fingers: An 18-point Healing System (Dialectic Press, 1989).  In 1975, Dr. Dale had just returned from China and was giving a very elementary course in Oriental Medicine.  I told Dr. Dale about my diagnosis, and on his advice I telephoned Michio Kushi, a nationally-known authority on macrobiotics and founder of the Kushi Institute in Massachusetts. Macrobiotics is a natural diet and lifestyle system based on the oriental principles of yin and yang and their presence in whole, organic foods. It is aimed at restoring an energetic balance and wellness through diet and lifestyle changes.

Over the years, thousands of people have tried the macrobiotic approach to cure themselves of cancer and other diseases; diets typically are customized to suit an individual’s unique needs. Kushi suggested I immediately start on an extreme macrobiotic diet that required me to eat nothing but cooked brown rice for ten days. Chewed many times in a relaxed and meditative atmosphere, the rice became a liquid that I visualized would bring loving, life-giving and healing energy to my body and mind. After ten days, I gradually added other grains, vegetables, seaweeds, seeds, beans, miso soup, and a small amount of fruit to my meals. I steamed the vegetables or sautéed them in small amounts of cold-pressed oil. I eliminated all spices and flavorings except for tamari. At every meal, I meditated on how the food I was eating had been created just for me, to heal my body, and cooked with love. I taught myself to think of the food as my healing tonic, my medicine.

Dr. Dale also referred me to a local acupuncturist and herbalist, Dr. Felix Marquand, who I would visit twice a week. After my acupuncture treatments, he would offer me sweet potatoes and herbal tea, and then give me a hard little ball of herbs to chew on. I never asked him what they were, but I’ve since learned that Chinese medicine uses many different herbs to treat many types of cancer. My sessions usually lasted about an hour.  I paid $5.00 per session and helped him to tidy up his office.

Thinking back, it seems really odd to me that I never thought to ask Dr. Marquand what he was giving me. But I have to remind myself that this was in the mid 1970’s, when patients didn’t question their doctors – even the alternative ones. Back then, I was enough of a rebel to see an acupuncturist in the first place!

On my own, to augment the macrobiotics and Chinese medicine, I placed heated castor oil packs on my abdomen for about twenty minutes a day. I had read that Edgar Cayce, the renowned psychic healer, had used this method to treat cervical cancer. Cayce used to go into a psychic trance, from which he could determine specific treatments for each patient. His prescriptions were later cross-referenced and compiled into books so that people like me could use them as well.  He had alarming success in helping people to heal themselves.

After a month, I made an appointment with my mother’s gynecologist. He was not a lot happier with my decision to forgo standard treatment than my first doctor had been, and wanted to perform cryosurgery which would mean freezing my cervix to slow the growth of the abnormal cells. I refused. He finally agreed to give me a Pap test. This time, the results were better, showing some pre-cancerous lesions on my cervix. Still not normal, but remarkably improved. It was enough for me, though: I was convinced my cancer was in remission and that I was on the right path.

It has always amazed me how many people can learn that there is something seriously wrong with their bodies and then go on living the same sort of lives, thinking that just because they are taking some drug (or getting acupuncture or using some herbs) everything is going to be better. I believed then – and still believe today – that we also must do something to change the environment from which our diseases form. In my case, I felt an incredible pull to travel. So off I went.

With a few good friends, I visited Peru and Venezuela. We had no real itinerary; we just knew we wanted to hike in the Andes and spend some time among the descendants of the Incas. I felt that leaving the cities of North America would be an essential part of my healing process. On the trip, I kept up the simple “rice and beans” macrobiotic diet I had begun. I carried my own cooking utensils and brown rice in my backpack, and I supplemented my diet with organic vegetables and a small amount of fruit grown by the indigenous people whose villages we visited.

Walking through ancient ruins and sleeping in primitive dwellings, I began to feel a sense of clarity about my life. Out of my familiar urban environment, I was at peace with myself and the world. I believe it was a major component in my healing to break away from the routines and unhealthy energy of my life back home at that time.  Mostly, I felt that fear was leaving me.  I knew that it would be impossible to heal myself if I carried any tension at all in my body, mind or spirit.  Four months later, my wallet and my mind decided it was time to return to the US.

I felt so much better when I got back home in June. I was certain that my cancer was on its way out of my body. I went to my new doctor for another Pap test. This time the result was normal. The doctor warned me that this test result was no guarantee that the cancer was gone – it could be just a temporary improvement, he said. But I knew better.

Two and a half years after I returned from South America, I gave birth to my son Aaron, who has just made me a grandmother. I’ve never had a recurrence of cervical cancer. Cancer swept me into a reality of how temporary and precious it is to have a human body. It was one of the wake-up calls of my life.

For the past thirty-five years, since this challenge of cancer, I have researched first hand a variety of modalities for keeping me balanced and healthy. I have been very attracted to nutrient dense raw and some cooked foods, juices, green smoothies and juice fasting for detoxification, enemas and colonic irrigation, and have become an advanced holistic therapist helping others to rejuvenate themselves and prevent disease. I guide many people through the process of detoxification just using organic juices, broths, tea, Green Smoothies, an ocean setting, massage, energy healing, enemas and colonics and lots of TLC. I have completed a book and musical CD of songs for healing called Romancing Life. I became a grandmother to Alana Rose in December, 2009 and Ella Pearl in July, 2012.

STDs and Virus in California

In 2015, the CDC recorded more than 1.5 million new cases of chlamydia, nearly 400,000 cases of gonorrhea and nearly 24,000 cases of syphilis, the three most common STDs. In California, there were nearly 200,000 new cases of chlamydia, nearly 54,000 cases of gonorrhea and nearly 5,000 cases of syphilis. The syphilis rate of infection was nearly twice that of the national average, according to the new data.

The 2015 data show:

  • Americans ages 15 to 24 years old accounted for nearly two-thirds of chlamydia diagnoses and half of gonorrhea diagnoses.
  • Men who have sex with men (MSM) accounted for the majority of new gonorrhea and P&S syphilis cases (82 percent of male cases with known gender of sex partner). Antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea may be higher among MSM.
  • Women’s rate of syphilis diagnosis increased by more than 27 percent from 2014 to 2015. Reported congenital syphilis (which occurs when the infection is transmitted from a pregnant woman to her baby) increased by 6 percent. Women still account for less than 10 percent of new P&S syphilis infections.

Teens and young adults ages 15 to 24 account for nearly two-thirds of diagnosed cases of chlamydia and half of gonorrhea cases.

Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis are curable with antibiotics. Widespread access to screening and treatment would reduce their spread. Most STD cases continue to go undiagnosed and untreated, putting individuals at risk for severe and often irreversible health consequences, including infertility, chronic pain and increased risk for HIV. STDs also impose a substantial economic burden: CDC estimates STD cases cost the U.S. healthcare system nearly $16 billion each year.

  • New research suggests shaving your pubic hair may increase your risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease (STD) known as molluscum contagiosum
  • The number of cases of molluscum contagiosum have risen along with rates of pubic hair removal; among 30 patients observed at a private skin care clinic, nearly all of them had removed their pubic hair, the vast majority by shaving
  • Shaving or waxing can cause irritation and micro-trauma to your skin that increases your risk of contracting a viral infection
  • The virus may also spread through self-infection caused by scratching skin irritated by shaving

The finding supports the researchers theory that hairless genitals may provide an opportunity for sexually transmitted diseases like molluscum to take hold, with shaving showing the strongest association.

Molluscum contagiosum is spread easily, and the researchers suggested the virus may have spread primarily through self-infection caused by scratching skin irritated by shaving. Other skin issues were also noted among the study participants, which may also have been related to the pubic hair removal. These included:

  • Warts (the researchers suggested shaving your pubic hair may also increase the risk of genital warts caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV))
  • Bacterial skin infections
  • Scars
  • Ingrown hairs

Micronutrients and Multivitamins Delay HIV Progression

One study found, for instance, that whey protein supplementation raises CD4 cell counts in people with HIV.10 Neem leaf has also been found to increase CD4 levels in HIV and AIDS patients,11 and so has selenium.12 Natural substances work against HIV via other mechanisms as well. Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, is a component of green tea that inhibits the progression of HIV by binding itself to the exact spot HIV needs to infect a healthy T-cell, a kind of white blood cell crucial to fighting infections.13

Fruit and vegetable concentrates containing polyphenols have also been shown to benefit HIV patients,14 as has curcumin, which may help treat HIV-associated diarrhea, weight loss and abdominal pain.15 Other natural compounds that have shown promise against HIV include:16

HIV infection is known to cause damage to your gastrointestinal tract, where about 80 percent of your immune system resides. Research suggests that consuming beneficial bacteria known as probiotics may help to lower risks of infection and inflammation in HIV patients and even enhanced gastrointestinal immune function.

Cinnamon Elderberry Sumac
Licorice Spirulina American ginseng
Korean ginseng Lemon juice and lemongrass Tea tree
Olive leaf extract Pomegranate Carnosic acid in rosemary

Similarly, the new study found that HIV-positive people who took multivitamins (B vitamins and vitamins C and E) and selenium fared much better than those who did not.

Compared to the placebo group, those taking both a daily multivitamin and selenium were half as likely to have drops in CD4 immune cells to levels that would typically be treated with anti-HIV drugs.6 Further, those taking the supplement combination were also half as likely to develop or die from AIDS.

The researchers concluded that the multivitamin-selenium combination, when taken for 24 months, was safe and significantly reduced the risk of immune decline and morbidity, noting that it “may be effective when started in the early stages of HIV disease.” As reported in the study:

Micronutrient deficiencies, known to influence immune function, are prevalent even before the development of symptoms of HIV disease and are associated with accelerated HIV disease progression. Micronutrient supplementation has improved markers of HIV disease progression (CD4 cell count, HIV viral load) and mortality in clinical trials…

The B vitamins, vitamins C and E, and the trace element selenium are essential nutrients necessary for maintaining a responsive immune system. Selenium may also have an important role in preventing HIV replication.”

Bolster a positive immune response, which will help to ward off infections and chronic disease.

  • Focus on eating more immune-boosting foods, including mushrooms, leafy greens, fermented foods, whey protein, and coconut oil, Vitamin C.
  • Get proper sleep.
  • Minimize stress using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or other stress-management tools.
  • Optimize your vitamin D levels (vitamin D deficiency is common among those with HIV18).
  • Exercise.
