Dark chocolate with coconut butter and coconut sugar, anti-anxiety drug

  • Science now shows that chocolate may be good for you. Five chemical compounds contained in raw, unadulterated chocolate are highlighted to show exactly what they are and how they work.
  • First, antioxidant polyphenols that neutralize free radicals provide some of the most compelling aspects of eating chocolate because they can reduce processes associated with the development of diseases like Alzheimer’s, heart disease and cancer.
  • Second, chocolate contains anandamide, named after the Sanscrit word for “bliss,” which is a neurotransmitter in the brain that temporarily blocks feelings of pain and anxiety.
  • The caffeine and theobromine in chocolate have been shown to produce higher levels of physical energy and mental alertness while, counter-intuitively, lowering blood pressure in women.
  • Chocolate’s heart-friendly properties may be due to the presence of epicatechins, antioxidants which are found in higher concentrations in darker and raw forms.
  • Studies showed that one-and-a-half ounces of dark chocolate a day for 2 weeks reduced stress hormone levels.

Theobromine in cocoa and carob products

In modern medicine, theobromine is used as a vasodilator (a blood vessel widener), a diuretic (urination aid), and heartstimulant.[1]

Theobromine increases urine production. Because of this diuretic effect, and its ability to dilate blood vessels, theobromine has been used to treat high blood pressure.[21] The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition notes that historic use of theobromine as a treatment for other circulatory problems including arteriosclerosis, certain vascular diseases, angina pectoris, and hypertension should be considered in future studies.[22]

Following its discovery in the late 19th century, theobromine was put to use by 1916, when it was recommended by the publication Principles of Medical Treatment as a treatment for edema (excessive liquid in parts of the body), syphilitic angina attacks, and degenerative angina.[23]

In the human body, theobromine levels are halved between 6–10 hours after consumption.[21]

Theobromine has also been used in birth defect experiments involving mice and rabbits. A decreased fetal weight was noted in rabbits following forced feeding, but not after other administration of theobromine. Birth defects were not seen in rats.[24] Possible future uses of theobromine in such fields as cancer prevention have been patented.[25]

Theobromine has also been shown to improve the microhardness of tooth enamel which could potentiality increase resistance to tooth decay.

Microbiology of cocoa fermentation and its role in chocolate quality

The first stage of chocolate production consists of a natural, seven-day microbial fermentation of the pectinaceous pulp surrounding beans of the tree Theobroma cacao. There is a microbial succession of a wide range of yeasts, lactic-acid, and acetic-acid bacteria during which high temperatures of up to 50 degrees C and microbial products, such as ethanol, lactic acid, and acetic acid, kill the beans and cause production of flavor precursors. Over-fermentation leads to a rise in bacilli and filamentous fungi that can cause off-flavors.

The physiological roles of the predominant micro-organisms are now reasonably well understood and the crucial importance of a well-ordered microbial succession in cocoa aroma has been established. It has been possible to use a synthetic microbial cocktail inoculum of just 5 species, including members of the 3 principal groups, to mimic the natural fermentation process and yield good quality chocolate.

Reduction of the amount of pectin by physical or mechanical means can also lead to an improved fermentation in reduced time and the juice can be used as a high-value byproduct. To improve the quality of the processed beans, more research is needed on pectinase production by yeasts, better depulping, fermenter design, and the use of starter cultures.

Palo Alto housing issues

Bay area housing costs is increasing every quarter it seems. I wanted to share one comment on this issue.

Yes, excellent article on the historical perspective and views of current CC members, other community leaders, committee members, and prospective future CC members running for the open seats in November’s election.

Now if real viable solutions would be implemented that would be nice. Idealism won’t get housing built. It will take clear rational thought to accomplish it without impacting our quality of life very much. It will have some impact, no question. There have been several ideas put forward that could work and I’ve supported some of them previously. Increasing the height limit in certain areas (65 feet) to allow building more housing units on the same footprint. My thought is that they should be built near the work centers so that the employees wouldn’t have to commute and could walk to work. I’ve even suggested a couple of Channing House sized buildings, but that would require higher height limits and their locations would have to be carefully selected. Sorry, I don’t have any locations in mind.

My thinking has been that these units would be occupied by either the young tech workers, mostly singles, or the older retired citizens of our community. These ‘bookend’ groups would have no or minimal impact on our schools. I won’t comment on the infrastructure impact because I just don’t know. Yes, fewer car commuters, thus less traffic congestion and parking problems, but the utilities part I just don’t know about. Aren’t I so humble to say ‘I don’t know’ when I don’t know? lol!

“Economist Steve Levy, who is affiliated with Palo Alto Forward, likewise argued that the city should take a “flexible” approach and use performance measures to mitigate the impacts of growth.” Oh, how I wish I could understand what that means. I’m trying to visualize what those ‘performance measures’ might be and how they would mitigate the impacts of growth. I’ll keep trying by concentrating very hard for a vision to appear.

I really liked the historical facts presented in the article. That took a lot of research and I thank you for doing that Gennady.

Now, let’s go ahead and relax some of our ordinances and change zoning as necessary, but judiciously, and then wait for the developers to rush in with their proposals for housing only projects, including affordable housing. How long do you think we’ll have to wait?? I’ll check the actuarial tables again but I don’t think I’ll be around to see it happen.

The rate of growth cited in the article was very revealing. From 2000 to 2012 it averaged 173 units per year. I’d like to know what kind of units they were and their locations, but that’s not all that important. But to reach the goal of 6000 additional units by 2030 (14 years) would require 429 units per year.
That’s 2.5x the rate over that 12 year period. I really hope I’m not the first one to make that calculation. Certainly many of our CC members knew that already. Right?

As much as I didn’t like much of what Kate Downing had to say, I think she was right on one thing. Uncontrolled building of office space, allowed over many years by many developer friendly administrations, caused the job-housing imbalance.

Back again to the ‘more housing needed’ topic: Let’s do a little checking, recon, before we take action. Let’s ask those developers what they would charge the renters of micro, studio, 1 bdrm, 2 bdrm, and family sized units.

I have a hunch none would be affordable for our day workers who do our gardening, house cleaning, work in the restaurants we love, do handyman jobs, and perform care giving duties in assisted living facilities or in our homes.

Is it safe to have Fucoxanthin alongside Yohimbine?

My answer to Is it safe to have Fucoxanthin alongside Yohimbine?

Answer by Connie b. Dellobuono:

I would take Fucoxanthin, brown seaweed extract first and stop Yohimbine to see the effects.

From Wiki:

Some metabolic and nutritional studies carried out on rats and mice at Hokkaido University indicate that fucoxanthin promotes fat burning within fat cells in white adipose tissue by increasing the expression ofthermogenin.

A subsequent double-blind placebo-controlled human study of females with liver disease using supplementation with seaweed extract containing fucoxanthin in combination with pomegranate seed oil showed in an average 4.9 kg (11 lb) weight loss in obese women over a 16-week period.

Another 16-week trial is currently underway that is investigating the effects of a combination supplement of brown seaweed extract (containing fucoxanthin) and pomegranate seed oil. This study is looking at the effects of this supplement on body composition, resting energy expenditure, blood pressure, and serum lipid levels and liver enzyme levels of obese men and women following a hypocaloric diet. A manuscript involving the complete results of this study is still pending.

Fucoxanthin is being looked into for its anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, and anti-cancer effects. A study has shown that fucoxanthin has strong effects on oxidative stress, oxidative stress-related diseases, and cancers.

Research on how fucoxanthin may have preventive effects on cancer is also being done. Many studies show that it aids in anti-proliferation, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis induction, suppression of angiogenesis, and anti-drug potential. Without reducing its therapeutic efficacy, fucoxanthin could also reduce the toxicity that comes with the use of conventional medicine. More research in animal models of disease is needed to be done to obtain more conclusive evidence on the molecular basis of fucoxanthin action.

Fucoxanthin is isolated from a brown algae which has been reported to be a popular health food. The fucoxanthin in this algae induces apoptosis of various cancer cells. It also has anti-tumor activities in various cancer cells. This particular study has shown that fucoxanthin has an inhibitory effect on invasiveness of cancer cells through suppressing the expression of gelatinolytic enzyme MMP-9. This study also found that fucoxanthin suppressed the motility of melanoma cells

How helpful is bupropion for ADD/ADHD?

My answer to How helpful is bupropion for ADD/ADHD?

Answer by Connie b. Dellobuono:

Its most important side effect is an increase in risk for epileptic seizures, which caused the drug to be withdrawn from the market for some time and then caused the recommended dosage to be reduced. Daniel Amen uses SPECT brain scan and a wholistic method of brain development which include nurture, whole foods and other good stuff.

My answer to What long-term impact has 2 months of use of atypical antipsychotic (AP) drugs on dopamine (DA) recept…

Answer by Connie b. Dellobuono:

Environmental influence (drug use), genes and individual immune system are factors to consider on how well our body can detox any drug abuse. When our body is given a drug, it tries to create homoestasis but the outside drugs are toxins that in long term use can down regulate or depress most body functions.

From Wiki:

First-generation antipsychotics, known as typical antipsychotics, were discovered in the 1950s. Most second-generation drugs, known as atypical antipsychotics, have been developed more recently, although the first atypical antipsychotic, clozapine, was discovered in the 1960s and introduced clinically in the 1970s. The terms neuroleptic and major tranquilizer were used for older antipsychotic drugs, but are gradually dropping from use. Both generations of medication tend to block receptors in the brain's dopamine pathways, but atypicals tend to act on serotonin receptors as well.

What long-term impact has 2 months of use of atypical antipsychotic (AP) drugs on dopamine (DA) receptors and cells?

Answer by Connie b. Dellobuono:

Cancer signs involved chronic cough, chronic pain, loss of weight, loss of appetite and lack of sleep. Know these signs. Any pain near the lungs and coughing should not be disregarded. A friend who has neuroendocrine cancer (spread in the lungs) had hip pain for a long time and now in last stage when the cancer was discovered.

Inhaled fungus from a bagpipe

Dr Mercola wrote:

  • Smoking isn’t the only culprit. Sadly, however, it causes about 85-90% of lung cancer types.
  • An estimated 23.5% of men and 18.1% of women in the US smoke and put themselves at risk not only of lung cancer, but also of stroke, asthma, and other serious illnesses.
  • Individuals who smoke have 20-25 times greater risk of lung cancer.

Then there’s the danger posed by second-hand smoke. At the end of the day, do you know the true cost of smoking to your kids and family?

The smoking habit spells health troubles not only for you, but also for the many others positioned on the receiving end of your cigarette smoke. I deeply empathize with people like me who don’t smoke but are pained to see their loved ones do.

Second-hand smoke is another real dark truth, and it causes a lineup of defects and multiple deficiencies for babies and adults alike. Smoking deprives your body of the right vitamins, minerals, and nutrients such as Vitamin C, thus making you vulnerable to lung cancer and other diseases.

Is it true that by the time one begins to feel pain and discomfort from lung cancer, it was already too late long before?
