My experience working as nutritionist in a women’s health clinic

I worked as a nutritionist with two OB/GYN doctors who performed hysterectomies (surgical removal of ovaries and uterus) near O’Connor Hospital in San Jose many years ago.

I got a copy of laboratory results of the patient from fecal, urine, blood and allergy tests.  I then summarized health data and identified needed minerals, vitamins, whole foods, lifestyle and other health ways that can help patients with reproductive health issues.

I gave nutrition consult with the patient for an hour. I interviewed the patient to ask for her sleep patterns, diet, and other lifestyle/health issues.

I noticed the following common thread in all of them:

  • Fecal tests shows parasites, bacteria and other microbes.
  • Some experience migraine and headache often (before the period and when under stress).
  • Blood shows anemia.
  • Skin is cold, sensitive to allergens and not smooth (some have extra hair).
  • Some of them started taking birth control pills at a young age.
  • Some has pain during intercourse which may exacerbate their hernia.
  • Some of them consumes gallons of milk with synthetic hormones, sugar and other processed foods.
  • Some are stressed, depressed and have heavy menstrual cramps and bleeding.

In the nutrition suggestions and summary of observations, I added the following regimen in their diet/lifestyle:

  • Consume less sugar and avoid food that they are allergic to (milk, corn, etc)
  • Wash produce with salt water or diluted vinegar.
  • Avoid plastics/styrofoam (when microwaving to avoid endocrine disrupting chemicals).
  • Lightly cook greens and other veggies.
  • Eat more whole foods (colored ones), good fats (walnuts, avocado), high fiber, greens (seaweed), raw garlic, probiotic, digestive enzymes (papaya, pineapple)
  • Join a gym or find an exercise buddy
  • Change sexual intercourse position to avoid hernia
  • Suggested some herbs to stop excess estrogen and heavy bleeding.
  • Up intake of minerals in the afternoon/evening: calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium
  • Others (sleeping at night and supplementation, when to eat, iron rich foods in the morning and calcium rich foods at night).

In the end, I gave them my listening ears and emotional support to help them through the changes in their body.
