No 401k, have your own retirement plan 801k
A new report from the National Institute on Retirement Security, based on analysis of the 2010 Survey of Consumer Finances, shows that about 45 percent of all working-age households don’t hold any retirement account assets, whether in an employer-sponsored 401(k) type plan or an individual retirement account.
Among those 55 to 64 years old, two-thirds of working households with at least one earner have retirement savings less than one year’s income, far below what they will need to maintain their standard of living in retirement. By a variety of measures, most households, even those with defined benefit pensions, are falling far short of the savings they will need.
The report lends weight to longstanding criticisms of the increased reliance on individual savings in the United States retirement system, including Jacob Hacker’s “The Great Risk Shift: The Assault on American Jobs, Families, Health Care and Retirement and How You Can Fight Back” and Teresa Ghilarducci’s “When I’m 64: The Plot Against Pensions and the Plan to Save Them.”
Current efforts to encourage 401(k) and I.R.A. accounts primarily benefit those who already have substantial savings. The National Institute on Retirement Security report shows that households with retirement accounts have five to six times the non-retirement wealth of non-owning households in the same age group. Recent research on tax incentives in Denmark shows that they encourage shifts from conventional accounts to retirement accounts, rather than increasing overall savings.
Households in the top fifth of the income distribution reap 70 percent of the tax subsidies. Money in retirement accounts (unlike pension benefits) can be bequeathed to heirs, perpetuating wealth inequality.
Employers have little incentive to expand benefits. Some 401(k) fans contend that automatic enrollment (requiring employees to opt out of a regular contribution, rather than opting in) could increase participation. But evidence suggests that employers who use automatic enrollment offer a lower match to employee contributions in order to control their costs.
Many families who manage to accumulate retirement savings are forced to dip into them when they experience unemployment or other unexpected economic stress. The 10 percent withdrawal penalty makes this a particularly costly way of paying bills.
An increasing percentage of workers are being forced to stay on the job longer than they had planned. The percentage of workers expecting to retire after age 65 increased to 33 percent in 2010 from 11 percent in 1991 and 19 percent in 2000. That’s a hardship not just for the older generation but for the younger generation waiting for jobs to open up.
That younger generation may also find that their older family members, unable to meet their medical expenses or long-term care needs, will need significant financial assistance.
The National Institute for Retirement Security reports that more than 90 percent of Americans they surveyed would favor a new pension plan that is available to everyone, is portable from job to job and provides contributors with a monthly check throughout retirement.
This sounds a lot like the guaranteed retirement accounts that Professor Ghilarducci has proposed, which would require all workers and employers to contribute to a retirement fund but guarantee a minimum rate of return. This more centralized approach would both lower administrative costs and pool risks.

The book of Patrick Kelly, The Retirement Miracle and Tax-free retirement , described another way of retirement income strategy (start at $300 to $1500 per month, 8% growth rate, zero market risk), not the 401k, where some lost more than half to taxes when they withdraw at age 65 yrs old or older.

When we are sick we go to our health care provider with our health care insurance who pays the hospital and doctors for health care service. Another way to receive funds directly to us and not to health care providers and hospitals is through National Life Group’s Equity Index Universal life Insurance (IUL) with full living benefits during terminal, chronic or critical illness. We then have an access to portion of the face value of the insurance that not only includes a certain amount for our retirement but also funds ready to be accessed during terminal, critical or chronic illness. Together, the health care insurance and IUL provide funds when we need it the most and while we are still living.
We are then secured in knowing that during times of illness, we have funds to replace our lost income, to pay for other expenses not paid for by our health care insurance long after we are already recovering from an illness. While we are still healthy, we need provisions that encompass our lifestyle and health care needs outside of the range of coverage of our health care insurance. This is where a full living benefits with IUL with National Life Group (original creator of full living benefits) comes in. You are also saving for retirement at the same time, affording asset protection and tax free wealth distribution. When you decide to secure your tax-free retirement distribution (8% growth rate, zero market risk), your asset (your life), leave an estate to your love ones and provide funds accessible during terminal, chronic and critical illness, the following are your contacts at Premier Financial Alliance whose flagship product is National Life Group, IUL:

What is your retirement income strategy
What is your retirement income strategy? Below are answers from others:
Orygunduck–along with many other posters–believes that the best retirement plans are holistic, weaving a healthy, happy, and productive lifestyle together with a sensible portfolio plan. This poster’s six-step strategy revolves around “1) Preventive medicine, weight control, exercise daily; 2) Reliable income from income stocks; 3) Quality family time; 4) Travel; 5) Hobbies; 6) Volunteer.”
Ohioknight was kind enough to mention me in his holistic retirement plan. “Healthy lifestyle. Live within your means. Invest 15+%. Read Christine. Love life . . . it’s too short.”
Pavlov’s formula for retirement is similar. “Live well below my means and save the rest. Invest wisely. Live a healthy and fulfilling life. Give back. Retire when all systems go!”
Ditto for Zorkl55, whose strategy is to “stay within reasonable means, accept financial limitations, and live with a rich emotional engagement in life.”
Retiredgary was also succinct: “Have diversified investments. Plan for a long life. Manage expenses and taxes. Have fun, ignore trends and status, and do what you like and want.”
Darwinian’s retirement strategy packs a punch with just four words (and a nod to actor Leonard Nimoy): “Live long and prosper.”
For GuppaZ155, a successful retirement revolves around marriage and family as much as it does a healthy financial picture. “Spend and enjoy a lifetime finding the right partner, raising a family, and accumulate assets sufficient to allow for us to maintain the same lifestyle in retirement that we enjoyed in our working years. Plan with spouse for the next phase in life, having fun, being a good person, and living within our means, so we can leave a legacy to our family, friends, and those in need.”
Finally, Andy Brooks’ tweet is an encouragement to other retirement planners to dream big. “I hope to have several noncorrelated groups of assets producing earnings while living life to its fullest . . . and world peace.”

Below is an article at yahoo.com on avoiding high retirement health costs.
Blair noted too that some individuals with chronic conditions may find a Medicare Advantage Special Needs Plan (SNP) to be suitable for their needs. Medicare SNPs, said Blair, are a specific type of Medicare Advantage plan that limit enrollment to individuals with specific diseases and/or chronic conditions, which may include cancer, cardiovascular disorders, dementia, and end-stage renal disease.
Blair said SNPs tailor their benefits, provider networks, and drug formularies to best meet the specific needs of certain group of individuals. Read Your Guide to Medicare Special Needs Plans (SNPs).
There are other things that you can do to trim costs, according to a recent survey from eHealthInsuance.com.
For instance, less than 9% of individuals who take prescription medication for diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) are in the Medicare Part D plan with the lowest total out-of-pocket costs available to them, according to review of more 46,000 unique user sessions on eHealthMedicare.com and PlanPrescriber.com.
The eHealthInsurance study, which reviewed unique user sessions that occurred on eHealth’s Medicare plan comparison and enrollment websites, during the 2013 Medicare annual enrollment period, found that 92% of Medicare enrollees who take medications for one of these four major illnesses were not in the lowest cost plan for the specific prescription drugs they were taking, according to a release.
The eHealthInsurance study found that individuals taking prescription medications for these specific drugs would save an average of $716 on prescription drugs in 2013 by switching to the MA prescription drug plan or stand-alone prescription drug plan with the lowest total out-of-pocket costs for their medications. What does Obamacare mean for the health-care industry as a whole? stocks, etc
Let me (Ryan) share an example with you that should help you understand Obamacare a little better:
Imagine you sold lemonade for $2 at a stand in your front yard.
Let’s say 100 people walk by your stand each day. And of those people, 50 choose to buy… 25 people don’t… and 25 people would be interested but could only afford a cup for $1.
Then, one day, the government passes a law that requires everyone to buy lemonade. For your 50 existing customers, they’d continue to pay you the $2 a cup they’ve always paid. In addition, though, you’d capture $2 a cup from the 25 people who didn’t want lemonade but now have to buy it. And for the 25 who couldn’t afford it, the government would pay you to offer lemonade at $1.
In other words, the government would be giving you more customers and paying you at the same time. A pretty attractive deal when you consider that your business would’ve grown its revenues 100% practically overnight. And that a simple piece of legislation would’ve made you — and your investors — a heap of cash.
Now to be fair, Obamacare doesn’t really work like this. For one thing, the government has high hopes that the program will lead to lower costs for health insurance — to carry the lemonade analogy further, the law would set limits on your ability to charge more than your actual expenses plus a reasonable profit rather than letting you keep selling at $2. Moreover, while Obamacare’s individual mandate calls for everyone to have insurance, people still have the alternative of not getting coverage and paying penalties instead.
Still, the likelihood is that many more people will buy insurance than before, and that could lead to big gains both for the companies that provide that insurance and the hospitals and other medical providers who serve newly insured patients.
All that explains why we’ve already seen numerous health-care stocks return as much as 71.0%, 124.3%, and even 130.0% since the bill passed. Not only are they likely to benefit from huge numbers of new customers; they’re also going to reap profits from government subsidies as well — and that means a never-before-seen profit opportunity for investors like you and me…
These landmark changes don’t happen often. But when they do, you need to be ready (and well informed!) if you want a piece of the profits. So stick with us and pay close attention to what Dan has to say about Obamacare’s provisions… Then later, I’ll be back to give you the inside track on Obamacare’s winning investment formula.
Cancer shield
When my father was diagnosed with last stage lung cancer, we juiced fresh green papaya and apples, since the strong papaya enzyme was believed to remove the coating of cancer cells so that the body’s immune system can attack them. The doctor said he would live for another 3 months, he lived for 9 more months at home.
Today I read an article at nytimes.com with similar cancer shield properties in the form of medicinal drug (immunotherapeutic meds) . See the story below:
The first indication that a cancer’s protective shield might be breached came in 2010, after a trial of the drug ipilimumab in patients with otherwise untreatable melanoma. The drug unleashes the immune system, letting it overwhelm tumors even if they have a protective shield.
Patients who took the drug survived an average of 10 months, or 4 months longer than those randomly assigned to a different treatment. And about 20 percent of patients who responded have now survived up to 10 years. It was the first drug to improve survival for patients with metastatic melanoma in a randomized trial.
“It was spectacular,” said Dr.Axel Hoos, vice president for oncology research and development at GlaxoSmithKline, who helped develop the drug when he was at Bristol-Myers Squibb. “Until that tipping point, immunotherapy had a bad name. It didn’t work.”
The drug was approved for melanoma in March 2011, with a high price tag — $120,000 for a course of therapy.
Natural food toxins: licorice and others so eat in moderation
It would be nice if plants were made just to be our food. But what they have in mind is, in the first place, their own survival. Part of it is that they often contain what could be broadly called “natural pesticides”: substances that are toxic to mold, insects and, sometimes, animals.
We are not talking just poisonous mushrooms and exotic wild plants. It includes foods that we eat almost daily: carrots (contain carotatoxin and myristicin, nerve poison and hallucinogen, respectively), parsley, parsnip and celery (contain psolarens, increasing skin photosensitivity and vulnerability to cancer), black pepper and nutmeg (carcinogen saffrol), some herbs, like comfrey (contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, inflicting liver damage), and many others.
Naturally occurring plant toxins, just as manmade pesticides, usually disrupt metabolic processes by blocking certain enzymes. Possible effects range from hallucinogenic to degenerative and mutagenic.
Fortunately, most of natural food pesticides are intended for much smaller predators, and don’t pack enough of a punch to harm humans. However, prolonged use of little known herbal preparations and teas, carries the risk of harming your health.
Three major groups of natural food toxins are alkaloids, bioactive amines, and fungal toxins. Worth mentioning are also purines, salicylates, pyrrolizidine alkaloids and carrageenan.
Nightshade alkaloids
It’s been known for long time that animals grazing on pastures with abundant nightshades, often develop debilitating arthritis. Its cause has been traced to the potent chemical compounds contained in all nightshades, alkaloids. Veterinarian literature records nightshade alkaloids also causing anything from crippling cardiovascular disease, to bone degeneration and genetic damage.
Unfortunately, we humans are not spared from their toxicity. And plants from nightshade family are rather abundant in our diet. They include potato, tomato, peppers, eggplant, cayenne, chili and paprika. Another well-known member of nightshade family is tobacco.
One of the mechanism through which nightshade glycoalkaloids can affect your health is by interfering with the acetyl cholinesterase enzyme, a vital part of the neuromuscular function. You may get the picture of how important this enzyme is from the fact that some snake venoms, as well as some nerve gases (sarin, VX) work by blocking its function.
Nightshade glycoalkaloids are also capable of damaging cell membranes, from endoplasmic reticulum, needed for cellular detoxication and protein synthesis, to sodium and calcium channels, crucial for proper cardiovascular function. But all this may and may not affect you. The mechanism of action of these glycoalkaloids is determined by their level in the body, and individual mode and level of sensitivity. The rate of body accumulation from their very low food level also varies individually, which only makes more unpredictable when and how they will affect you – if ever.
It is still fairly obscured as to how much nightshade toxicity contributes to the epidemic of degenerative diseases we are witnessing. However, practical research study by Dr. Norman Childers indicates that it is the major factor in
3/4 of those suffering from unexplained chronic pain,
be it arthritis, back pain, bad shoulder, sciatica, tendonitis, muscle pain, fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis. While it is an old injury, or degenerated bone or joint that usually gets the blame for the pain, most often it is caused by the inflammation spurred by nightshade glycoalkaloids injuring vulnerable cells in these compromised body areas.
When caused by nightshade toxicity, arthritic symptoms can be cleared by avoiding consumption of nightshades in any form and amount for up to 3 months. Relief can come much faster, but if it doesn’t it is necessary to stay on course for full three month in order to be able to rule out nightshade toxicity.
Nightshade-free diet has to be meticulously planned and executed, considering how many foods, condiments and supplements contain these widely used plants. Even minute amounts can trigger symptoms that may last for weeks.
Bioactive amines
Pesticide-like action of bio-active amines (chemical compounds also belonging to the broader group of alkaloids) is based on their chemical structure resembling that of some of our hormones, such as adrenaline.
Bio-active amines affect either blood vessels (vasoactive amines) – causing changes in blood pressure and related symptoms like migraine headaches – or the nervous system, by affecting the level and function of neurotransmitters (psychoactive amines).
For instance, the most widely consumed psychoactive amine, caffeine, causes a number of neurological effects from anxiety states and associated symptoms (including panic attacks), to “restless leg syndrome” and neurologically based migraines. Other pharmacological effects of caffeine include stimulating fluid elimination and dilating the airways.
In the nature, caffeine can be lethal to insects feeding on caffeine-containing herbs (it is chemically similar to strychnine, although not nearly as potent). It is much less of a threat to humans, but not necessarily harmless.
Most of caffeine’s neurological effects are due to it acting as antagonist to neurotransmitter adenosine, hence affecting brain function. Apart from that, inside the cell, it inhibits conversion of cAMP (cyclic 3′,5′-adenosine monophosphate) into its noncyclic form, thus lowering intracellular levels of this vary basic cellular metabolite. Specific consequences, again, depend on the intake level and individual biochemistry. In addition, caffeine affects hormonal function, effectively elevating important hormones, like adrenaline, noradrenalin and catecholamine (“fight-or-flight” hormone).
The three primary metabolites of caffeine, paraxanthine, theobromine and theophylline, also have their specific, relatively minor effects.
The overall effect on health and wellbeing ranges from beneficial to harmful, mainly determined by the level of consumption and metabolic efficiency. Caffeine is absorbed from intestine within 45 minutes from ingestion; its half-life in an average healthy adult is 4.9 hours, but can vary significantly – especially toward slower metabolizing – from one individual to another.
Obviously, the worst possible combination is high caffeine consumption by a slow metabolizer; such individual is most exposed to the caffeine build-up and its toxic effects. Following table summarizes possible adverse effects of acute caffeine overdose (usually in excess of 300mg, or so, but can be significantly less for sensitive individuals).
CAFFEINE TOXICITY (main symptoms)
Central nervous system
irritability, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, confusion, headache, delirium
Gastrointestinal
nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting
Muscular
trembling, twitching, overextension, seizures
Heart
rapid and/or irregular heartbeat
Systemic
dehydration, fever
Other
visual flashes, ear ringing, rapid breathing, skin oversensitivity to touch/pain
Chronic overuse of caffeine also may – and often does – cause adverse health effects. These are recognized as disorders: caffeine intoxication, as well as caffeine-induced sleep and/or anxiety disorder. Symptoms of the former are similar to those of caffeine overdose. For the latter, the symptoms can range from anxiety to panic attacks; they can mimic mental anxiety/panic disorders, including bipolar (manic depression), often leading into misdiagnosis and unnecessary long-term treatment with medications.
Separately from the overuse symptoms, but likely as frequent, are caffeine withdrawal symptoms, which may take place whenever a habitual caffeine intake is interrupted for more than 12 hours, or so. They vary individually, but typically are the result of the withdrawal of stimulatory effects of caffeine, combined with the increased sensitivity to adenosine (due to the increase in number of adenosine receptors, compensating for the caffeine obstructing their intended use). The symptoms persists for as long as it takes to the body to re-adjust, usually 1-5 days. They include headache, irritability, difficulty to concentrate, drowsiness, insomnia, stomachache, upper body and joint pain.
In all, habitual overuse of caffeine can take your health and wellbeing to a slippery slope. The main culprit of the overuse is usually coffee, in all forms, but some other dietary habits can also contribute. For comparison, 1 tablespoon (6g) of regular ground coffee (Folgers) contains 90mg of caffeine and 1 teaspoon (2.2g) of Folgers’ instant coffee powder 75mg8. A standard 6 fl oz serving of brewed (percolated) coffee averages about 100mg (same as 2 fl oz of espresso, and some 20% less than 6 fl oz of drip coffee), most 12 fl oz regular sodas about half as much, and 6 fl oz of black tea about one third. Most chocolates have low caffeine content, but some chocolate products can have it comparable, per unit weight, to that in black tea and sodas.
Majority of people feel stimulating effect – increase in alertness and/or lowered fatigue – with caffeine intake of 25-50mg. Significantly higher doses – 5 to 10mg per kg of body weight – have been reported to increase endurance in competitive cycling by up to 50%. This dose is still safely bellow caffeine’s LD50 (median lethal dose, a dose that kills half of subjects exposed), estimated for humans at 150-200mg per kg of body weight (equivalent of nearly 100 cups of regular coffee); obviously, regular consumption of caffeine at this level cannot be recommended.
Beside caffeine, the other two significant bio-active amines, histamine and tyramine, can be found in high amounts mostly in fermented foods: cheeses, yeast extracts, tuna, pickled herring, sausage, and others. Tyramine raises blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. Other possible symptoms include migraines, stomach pains and breathing difficulties.
Histamine, has the opposite effect – it dilates blood vessels, lowering blood pressure. Hence, in foods containing comparable levels of both, tyramine and histamine, one will likely tend to neutralize the effect of the other one (actual effect, as always, depends on individual biochemistry/sensitivities).
Table bellow lists some common foods with potentially high levels of tyramine and/or histamine4.

Fungal toxins
Many foods – cereals, oilseeds, spices and three nuts, moldy fruits and vegetables – can be contaminated with mycotoxins (aflatoxin, ochratoxin A, patulin, fusarium) produced by fungi. Not only potent toxins, able to cause serious damage to the liver, kidneys and nervous system, they are often carcinogenic and mutagenic.
For the most part, mycotoxins are not biodegradable, and can penetrate the food chain (meat, dairy) through infected feed crops. They are not destroyed by cooking or freezing. While children and pets are more vulnerable than adults, no one is safe. One of the most potent mycotoxins – aflatoxin – can be a hidden toxic contaminant in some foods of tropical origin, especially peanuts.
Beside plant foods, mycotoxins can also contaminate foods of animal origin, including meats, either directly, or as a result of mold-contaminated animal feed. Regulations are in place – especially in Europe – establishing permissible mycotoxins level in foods and animal feed. They significantly reduce the exposure; however, nothing can guarantee protection.
The only way to reduce your exposure to mycotoxins is to avoid foods that are not, or don’t appear fresh.
Purines
When the body metabolizes purines – an aromatic organic compound whose derivatives are naturally occurring in foods as DNA/RNA constituents (nucleobases adenine and guanine) – inefficient enzyme action can result in the build up of their end metabolite, uric acid. It then crystallizes in joints, causing gout. Foods highest in purines are meats (including fish and chicken), and particularly organ meats.
Table bellow lists high-purine foods, in descending order. Those producing over 400mg/100g of uric acid are very high; foods between 100-400mg/100g are moderately high, and those bellow 100mg/100g are considered low in purines.

Some plant foods – like soybean and some beans/legumes – have high nominal levels of purines, although generally lower than in meats.
Salicylates
Quite a few of fruits and vegetables have high salicylates content. Salicylic acid is phenolic compound (which include aspirin and aspirin-based pharmacological agents) to which some people – particularly children – can be sensitive. It can cause urticaria (hives) and/or angioedema, as well as mouth ulcers, irritability and hyperactivity in susceptible individuals.
There may also be some beneficial health effects of salicylates, resulting from their chemical similarity to aspirin. These are still being investigated and, obviously, have to be measured against their possible adverse effects.
Plant foods with highest salicylates level include raisins, canned prunes, raspberries, strawberries, honey (variable), most condiments, pickles, mint, licorice, sweet green pepper, endive, chicory, tomato sauce and pasta, zucchini, almonds and peanuts. Table bellow presents more detailed information on salicylates food content.
SALICYLATES, food content (mg/100g)
NEGLIGIBLE (5)
fruit: raisins, raspberries, canned plum herbs: licorice, mustard powder (over 10mg/100g) other: pickles, honey
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids
Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are found in quite a few herbs, some of them used occasionally for herbal preparations and teas. It includes Indian herb Heliotropium eichwaldii, with documented cases of toxicity when used internally, and some commonly used Chinese herbal preparations (zicao, kuandonghua, qianliguang and peilan).
The risk factor includes unknowingly substituted harmless herbs with those containing PAs. For instance, popular Mexican herbal tea, gordolobo yerba, usually obtained from Gnaphalium, has documented cases of liver poisoning when made of the similar in appearance Senecio longilobus.
Carrageenan
Algae often contain toxic substances. Carrageenan (undegraded, or natural type) is a substance extracted from seaweed, widely used as food additive (thickener and stabilizer). It has been found to cause ulcerative colon disease in laboratory animals.
While ulceration risk in humans is officially limited to the degraded (processed) version of carrageenan, it is prudent to make sure it is not on your menu on a regular basis in neither of the two forms.

Signs and symptoms your heart and kidney are not working well include redness in eyes, tiredness, headache, cannot sleep or go to deep sleep, leg pain, balance affected and many more signs that our body parts are affected.
In the bayarea, many are working more than two jobs with the high cost of living. We all have to slow down and listen to music coupled with cleansing breaths to lower our blood pressure. Although, eating well and exercise help in keeping a healthy body, stress and lack of sleep can do a lot of harm to our body especially to our heart and kidneys.

Americans buy health plan to avoid high cost of medical care
I buy a health plan to avoid high cost of medical care and most Americans have the same reason (motherjones.com).
And if health insurance against devastating medical costs is a good thing for us middle-class types, it is a good thing for the poor people too.
I remembered my co-worker who few months ago suffered a stroke and after recovering he incurred so high medical costs that he could no longer pay his house mortgage.

The ONE Thing, the surprisingly simple truth behind extraordinary results
The ONE Thing,
the surprisingly simple truth
behind extraordinary results
by Gary Keller with Jay Papasan
While waiting in the airport last Sunday, I read the book of Gary Keller. In his book, The ONE Thing, he listed the simple steps, habits and truths of reaching our dream or goal without any regret like most of those who died before us.
Here is the summary:
20% of our effort yields 80% of the results we need to succeed. We write a TO DO list of say 10 and identify the 4 success list that will help us succeed and then narrow down our list to get the result we want. We allocate 4 hrs block of our time per day to achieve the results we want that will lead us to our monthly, yearly, and 5-yr goal. We protect this 4-hr block of time until it becomes a habit of getting the results we need one day at a time. We work on our goal 4 hr per day for 300days a year until 5 years later we achieve that ONE goal.
To be accountable to our goal, we seek reality, acknowledge reality, own it, find solution and get on with it. We do this by reporting to a mentor and friends who will pat us on the back for a job well done.
The following are lies that will NOT help us get to our one goal: everything matters equally, multitasking, a disciplined life, will power is always on will-call, a balanced life, and big is bad.
Extraordinary results happen when we live with purpose, priority, productivity to go to extreme to get what matters most.
The truth is to use focusing questions. The quality of any answer is directly determined by the quality of the question. How we phrase the questions we ask ourselves determines the answer that eventually becomes our life.
Adopt a growth mindset. Talk like a success, walk like a success and dress for success.
To honor my dream before I die, I will act on it each day to get the results that matters most to arrive at my dream one day at a time.
Being appropriate in the moments of your life.
Start with big stuff.
Habits of successful people decide their future.
Experience of others is the best place to start when looking for your answer. Success leaves clues.
Happiness happens on the way to fulfillment.
Purposeful approach leads us to breakthrough ways of no glass ceiling to what amount of money we set for ourselves before our retirement comes.
Time waits for no one. When we gamble with time, we may be placing a bet we cannot cover.
$200 saved for the future is big, but many of us would prefer the $100 now not knowing the great consequences of our actions today.
It is not late to put an effort, focus, accountability and passion to our One dream.
What is your big goal? How many hours a day do you spend to reach your big goal? Do you have a supporting environment to reach your big goal? Do you protect these blocks of time to reach your big goal?
Do you have friends to report to on your daily and weekly results to get what matters the most, your big goal?
Stick to It – The Key to Achieving your Goals
“Diamonds are chunks of coal that stuck to their job”
– Gabriel Ross Perot
What is the key to successfully achieving your strategy and goals for this year? Just stick to it! George Patton famously said that “A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.” This sentiment is echoed in Lee Colan’s “quick-read” book titled “Sticking to It: The Art of Adherence”, where Colan persuasively argues that one’s ability to stick with a strategy is a significantly more important predictor of success than the strategy itself. What Colan calls “Adherence” is made up of three components – each is essential and has a multiplying effect:
- Focus – A clearly defined purpose and a simple plan that involves your team and allows you to say “no” to activities that don’t contribute to the strategy.
- Competence – Existence of SMART goals for you and your team with effective systems in place to accomplish and track achievement of those goals.
- Passion – Team members understand their roles and potential rewards. Furthermore, they are engaged through shared values and the respect you demonstrate in day-to-day actions.
If any of these is lacking, it will significantly diminish your likelihood of success. Of course, as you are working toward accomplishing your goals you will undoubtedly have problems to solve along the way. While you’ll need to overcome those daily challenges with effective processes, you still need to have the building blocks of Focus, Competence and Passion as your foundation.
At under 50 pages, Lee Colan’s book is practical, insightful and to the point. It includes an assessment and practical steps you can take for building adherence on your team immediately. You can learn more and find a copy of Colan’s book “Sticking to It: The Art of Adherence”
