It turns out that loneliness more than sucks — it can be deadly

It turns out that loneliness more than sucks — it can be deadly

by Justina Huddleston

When Britney Spears sang, “My loneliness is killing me” in “Baby One More Time,” she had no idea how right she was.

At the 125th annual convention of the American Psychological Association, one big point was made — we’re getting lonelier, and it could be killing us.

Now that the baby boomer generation is reaching old age, and since with old age often comes isolation, we could be seeing an increase in deaths caused by loneliness. Specifically, two meta-analyses of research done on nearly 4 million people found that social isolation, loneliness and living alone are linked with premature death, while having abundant and deep social ties can reduce your risk of premature death by up to 50 percent. Uh, time to finally join a book club, I guess. Making friends as an adult is legit hard, but this research makes it clear that it’s something you should try to do.

It makes sense when you think about it. If you don’t have a romantic partner who’s there to have your back or a social network of people to care for you, it’s easier to slip through the cracks if you aren’t taking care of yourself or aren’t able to care for yourself. And I’m sure all of us who have lived alone have had the same “what if I choke on this pizza roll and tragically perish and the landlord finds me days later dead in my underwear while Friends reruns autoplay on my laptop” thought (not that I would ever eat pizza rolls in my underwear, nuh-uh, not me!). If you live alone and have a medical emergency, you might not be able to call 911 and get help yourself — it’s genuinely scary to think about and something that a lot of older people face.

Add to that the fact that families don’t tend to stay in one area as much as they used to — only one of my close friends lives in the same town as their parents and just a handful live closer than a two-hour drive — and you can see how prevalent this isolation is becoming. The APA estimates that there are 42.6 million adults in the U.S. over the age of 45 who suffer from chronic loneliness, which is really heartbreaking.

But loneliness isn’t just a health hazard to older adults. “Being connected to others socially is widely considered a fundamental human need — crucial to both well-being and survival. Extreme examples show infants in custodial care who lack human contact fail to thrive and often die, and indeed, social isolation or solitary confinement has been used as a form of punishment,” says Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychology professor at Brigham Young University. “There is robust evidence that social isolation and loneliness significantly increase risk for premature mortality, and the magnitude of the risk exceeds that of many leading health indicators,” like smoking and metabolic syndrome, she said.

More: Is your only child a lonely child?

So what can be done?

If you immediately thought “Golden Girls,” you’re not far off. Holt-Lunstad says that people should prepare for retirement socially the same way they do financially so you don’t lose all of your friends when you stop working. Moving in with your single friends late in life is a perfect way to make sure you still have some close social ties and the sort of mutual care you can get by simply living with someone. No choking on pizza rolls in your underwear, basically.

She also says that doctors should screen for social connectedness just like they do other basic health metrics, and she thinks that community gardens and rec centers that can bring people together should be prioritized in city planning. Additionally, kids should be actively taught social skills in school, which honestly, I 100 percent could have benefitted from.

Trauma and the Gut, Dr PerlMutter

I’m very excited to bring you this research study from my friend Dr. Emeran Mayer. It’s a very intriguing report that demonstrates not only how changes in the gut bacteria correlate with irritable bowel syndrome, but, in addition, how these changes in the gut bacteria correlate with the size of various brain areas…

Nitric Oxide Dump Exercise with nose breathing to lower blood pressure and thin blood

By Dr Mercola

Super-Simple Way to Boost Your Health in Less Than 10 Minutes a Day

As mentioned, while I still endorse HIIT, I believe I’ve learned an even easier way to reap most if not all of the same benefits of a more elaborate HIIT protocol with just four simple movements — no weights or equipment required. Best of all, it only requires three minutes of your time, twice or three times a day, with at least two hours between sessions.

This is the nitric oxide (NO) dump exercise developed by Dr. Zach Bush. NO is an extremely important part of biochemical regulation, and understanding and controlling its formation has the potential for profound influences on your health. Most notably, NO:

  • Protects your heart by relaxing your blood vessels and lowering your blood pressure
  • Stimulates your brain
  • Kills bacteria and defends against tumor cells
  • Helps maintain homeostasis in your body

For a demonstration, see the video above. If you have previously watched this video, please review it again as I recently updated it to correct a couple of errors and omissions that sneaked into my previous video. A key component I forgot in my earlier video is to make sure you’re breathing through your nose and not your mouth. Your nose actually regulates more than 30 physical processes, including the release of NO, and of course serves to filter the air you breathe.

Compared to a regular HIIT protocol, the NO dump exercise is a far gentler strategy that can be done by just about anyone, regardless of your current level of fitness or age. You’d be hard-pressed to injure yourself doing this. Since you’re just using your body to perform simple knee bends and arm lifts, the exercise is more or less automatically customized to your current level of ability.

Yet, despite its simplicity, I’m convinced you’ll still obtain most of the benefits you get from HIIT. While I demonstrate 20 reps in the above video, it is best to start at 10 reps and gradually work your way up to 20. Remember, don’t do this more than every two hours, as it takes that long for the NO to be generated from eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase).

Portable micronutrient scan – biophotonic in the bay area

Email Connie at motherhealth@gmail.com to use the biophotonic scanner to measure the anti-oxidant or micronutrients in your body or for doctors to understand the baseline nutritional values of each patient.

Increase your cell nutrients (positive outcome from your gene expression with selected nutrients also in PDR – Physician Desk  Reference and see Youtube Dr Oz Pharmanex scanner which validates the supplements from this store) , email motherhealth@gmail.com to own this store for you:
www.clubalthea.pxproducts.com

Five years ago my scanned values was 55,000 and now it is 45,000. Now, I know that I need to take care of my body, with whole foods, exercise, sleep, de-stressed lifestyle and supplementation with AgeLOC vitality and AgeLOC youth to bring my body back to a state with higher levels of anti-oxidants as defenses against aging.

anti oxidant scan

A historical appreciation of the relationship of carotenoids with total body antioxidant status (and, thus, resistance to oxidative stress) can be found in the following papers:

  • Carotenoids can quench highly reactive singlet oxygen, and can also block free radical-mediated reactions.

  • Carotenoids by themselves are potent antioxidants, able to absorb 20 free radical hits before being destroyed.

  • Lutein and Zeaxanthin were found to support a protective role in delaying chronic disease.

  • Correlation between carotenoid levels and other classic antioxidants was established by Peng and colleagues in their Nutrition and Cancer article.

They evaluated the levels of seven carotenoids, two retinoids, and two tocopherols measured in plasma and buccal mucosal cells, as well as skin samples from 96 healthy subjects. The data clearly showed a correlation between the levels of micronutrients in plasma as well as skin. Their conclusion was that “the status of these micronutrients in the …. skin may be estimated from their plasma concentrations.” (The reverse, obviously also applies.) Notably, the skin carotenoids were determined with a microplane harvesting of a skin specimen that was then submitted for HPLC analysis – a process far more painful than the painless Biophotonic scanner. The scanner was not available at the time of this study.
• In a different paper, Sies and colleagues (2004) clearly identified carotenoids as one of the dietary antioxidants [thus, part of the “antioxidant network”] along with vitamins E and C, polyphenols, and other micronutrients (specifically Selenium as an example).49
• Svilaas and colleagues found that levels of carotenoids are actually predictive of levels of other, more conventionally thought of, antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E.50 In their study of 2,670 adults they found that the ability of carotenoids to predict serum levels of other…

JPMorgan Chase: Stop financing Trump’s hate

The petition to all major banks that finance or profit from private prisons and immigrant detention, including JPMorgan Chase, reads:
“Stop financing corporations like CoreCivic and The Geo Group that build and manage private prisons and immigrant detention centers and make enormous profits from the suffering of immigrants and communities of color.”

Dear Connie,

JPMorgan Chase stop financing Trump’s hate

Trump’s racist, anti-immigrant administration is a boon for private prison corporations and the banks that finance them.1 They stand to make enormous profits off the suffering of immigrant people.2,3

Right now, major banks like JP Morgan Chase (JPMC) finance CoreCivic and The Geo Group, the largest private prison and immigrant detention corporations in the nation.4 JPMC’s CEO Jamie Dimon is also normalizing Trump’s dangerous agenda by serving on Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum, despite massive pressure from shareholders to step down.5

In order for us to fight back on Trump’s war on immigrants, we must expose the financial institutions that are backing his hate and build a massive public outcry demanding that they cut all ties to Trump’s racist regime and get out of the dirty business of deportations and mass incarceration. As shareholders, account holders and consumers, we have the power to force banks like JPMC to act.

Tell JP Morgan Chase and all major banks: Stop financing private prison and immigrant detention corporations. Click here to sign the petition.

Our country’s mass incarceration crisis is already destroying communities of color.6 Immigration enforcement officers are ripping families apart and detaining immigrants for months and sometimes years before they even see a judge. Now, the racist bigots in the White House and Department of Justice are empowering federal agents to terrorize, arrest and imprison more immigrants.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) locked up more than 30,000 undocumented immigrants a day in inhumane and overcrowded detention centers last year.7 Trump’s hateful administration just increased ICE’s incarceration quota to 80,000 immigrants a day and is planning to expand the department’s workforce and infrastructure to reach that daily goal.8 If Trump and his heartless party succeed at appropriating tens of millions of taxpayer dollars for their mass deportation machine, they will need private prison corporations to help them build it.

Private prison corporations like CoreCivic and The Geo Group are notorious for exploiting immigrant detainees for cheap labor and forcing them to live in inhumane conditions.9 Nine detainees have filed a class-action lawsuit against The Geo Group for allegedly forcing more than 50,000 immigrants imprisoned in its detention centers to work for less than one dollar a day.10 The U.S. Bureau of Prisons canceled its contract with a CoreCivic prison in New Mexico after reports of its cruel treatment of sick inmates gained national attention.11 Now, ICE has contracted with the same prison to detain immigrants, without demanding any changes to the institution’s practices.

Trump’s and Republicans’ immigration crackdown means more immigrant arrests, more taxpayer funded detention centers and more business for morally bankrupt private prison corporations. We can throw a huge wrench in their plans by making sure that banks like JPMC refuse to back thier xenophobic agenda.

Tell JP Morgan Chase and all major banks: Stop financing private prison and immigrant detention corporations. Click here to sign the petition.

No corporation should profit from the suffering of immigrants and communities of color. In May, our friends at Make the Road New York organized a massive protest against JPMC’s investments in immigrant incarceration at its annual meeting.12 They organized another protest earlier this week. Add your name now to help ramp-up the pressure even more. Click the link below to sign the petition.

Bay area doctors can measure anti-oxidant levels with a biophotonic scanner

anti oxidant scanBay area primary care and geriatric doctors are invited to join the HCP Alliance to offer a way to test anti-oxidant levels of your patients and help them reach their health goals of increasing their vitality and youthfullness using a biophotonic scanner. Knowing our anti-oxidant levels allow us to control our lifestyle and find ways to increase our anti-oxidants from whole foods, supplementation, exercise and lifestyle (with less stress, more sleep).

Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are affected by inflammation and oxidation that comes with aging. Our mitochondria are better protected with colorful whole foods and anti-oxidant supplementation that affects our gene expression. Email Connie at motherhealth@gmail.com for more info about anti-oxidants based on your lifestyle and health goals and the use of the biophotonic scanner.

Reverse the aging process of the skin exposed to UV by 50% after 8 weeks of supplementation of blend of anti-oxidants.

Be mindful of your food and lifestyle at 40

Do not wait until a pancreatic, stomach or esophageal cancer appears to control how much you eat and the quality of whole foods you ingest? I have seen some of my senior clients die of stomach-liver cancer and heart failure. They suffered so much pain.

Sugar, transfat and a stressful life can influence your weight. Start minding what you eat early at age 20.

I cheated on an spoiled ice cream that sent me on diarrhea and vomiting. I took activated charcoal and water with a tsp of apple cider vinegar. I now watch what I eat. And, I am back to my 30-min cross fit and whole foods (colorful diet) and anti-oxidants AgeLOC Youth and vitality.

I recently took up a daily hour walk and a method of eating where I basically fast around 16 hours a day. I stop eating by 6 and usually don’t eat until 11 or 12. I also allow myself 2 meals a day. I call it first food and dinner. I also lift free weights 2x a week. The weight is rolling off. Diet and exercise are the only way and diet counts for most of it. At my last physical my doctor told me I was someone who had to eat less and exercise more than most people. I have taken that to heart. I also gave up for good bagels, white bread, all juices, all sodas (never drank them much anyway), french fries, all chips, ketchup and Peter Lugar steak sauce and generally watch carbs. I eat plenty of fruit and also drink red wine and vodka, but not at the same time. Also gave up beer.

Taffy, I too look at people licking cupcakes with ecstasy, and devouring hamburgers, and drinking sodas and I too feel alien. But in my case it is because I am now 97 pounds at 5’3″ after esophageal cancer surgery and I will never eat normally again. I tell my dear friends who are always dieting to please please please just take time and enjoy what they eat and stop hating themselves and flogging themselves with every mouthful. I was a lifelong dieter. When I was finally at my fittest, a good weight (though helped along by an earlier cancer) and very strong, I still felt fat. that’s what dieting does. Life goes by awfully fast. Don’t waste it berating yourself for stupid reasons.

My parents put me on the Judy Mazel’s Beverly Hills Diet when I was 10 years old back in 1980. To this day, I cannot even look at a raisin as a result of Judy’s ridiculous diet. And I was not a a fat child by any era’s standards, I just was not cheerleader thin.

Flash forward to present day, and I laughed out loud reading Taffy’s incredible article because I had been on every diet she named and felt like I had walked a mile or two in her same shoes. I have been a size 4 and a size 16, anorexic and also painfully obese for my 5’3 frame. What have I learned from my journey? Size does not matter. How you feel about yourself and your self worth does. I am now a healthy size 12. Thanks to the practice of hot yoga have learned to love myself and my body, rubbing thighs, jingling upper arms and all.
