Women’s rights are a human right

You don’t often hear from me. Normally, I am working behind the scenes, updating Excel sheets and tracking finances to make sure that Democracy for America members and staff have the resources they need to make change happen. But I felt it was necessary to step out of my comfort zone.

Last week, in case you missed it, the head of the DCCC shared that they will support and fund candidates that are against women’s rights, against abortion rights. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE.

As a mom, a woman, a wife, a daughter, it is time for the Democratic Party to state loudly and clearly women’s rights are a human right, and that is non-negotiable. Period.

Here is why the DCCC’s move is bad policy and bad politics:

  • The ability to make deliberate decisions about when, or if, one starts a family is essential to a woman’s freedom and economic security.
  • If we’re truly ready to fight for justice for all people — economic justice, racial justice, environmental justice and more — we can’t afford to leave anyone behind.
  • Democrats have to stand for something. We cannot be Republican-lite if we are to win back the over 1,000 seats we have lost in the last nine years.

Democracy for America has joined with NARAL, MoveOn, the Working Families Party and many other progressive organizations to release a statement of principles that clearly and unequivocally makes abortion rights a central part of our vision for a more progressive America.

Will you join with Democracy for America members and other progressives across the country and take a bold stand for abortion rights by signing on to our statement of principles?

Here is our joint statement in full:

As progressives, we know we cannot have a real conversation about economic security that does not include the ability to decide if, when, and how to raise a family; that being able to plan a pregnancy has a powerful effect on educational attainment, career trajectory, and chance to define our own destinies. As progressives, we stand united in understanding that policies that limit access to abortion and force medically unnecessary procedures are oppressive to women, especially low-income women and women of color.

As progressives, we stand united in the belief that a woman’s autonomy over her own body is not a secondary issue or a “social issue,” but rather a human right and a necessity in order to attain and preserve economic security in her life.

As progressives, we acknowledge that the current economic system is exceptionally punishing of mothers, single mothers, and mothers of color whose wages, job opportunities, and economic advancement suffer due to the “motherhood penalty.”

As progressives, we stand united in our belief that 21st century economic populism must include an understanding of how race and gender affect our economic reality and our economic opportunity.

As a progressive movement, we recognize that over the last decade there has been a massive erosion of access to abortion and attacks on contraception and we cannot back away from this fight without abandoning people and undercutting core constituencies in our base.

As we always have, progressives share our party with people who personally don’t believe that abortion is an option for them. This includes self-identified “pro-life” legislators up until the moment they seek to impose those personal views on their constituents and the country. If they vote to restrict abortion access or contraception access, they then undercut the party platform and they undercut the welfare of women. We strive for and believe in personal evolution and growth so, if they have voted to do so in the past, the burden of proof is upon them through subsequent votes and/or public statements — not in the heat of a campaign — but prior to running for office or reelection.

Thus, as progressives, we know to organize, mobilize, and win elections we must field candidates who understand the integral nature of these core values and bring the full power of our collective base to win.

I’m proud that DFA is taking a strong stand against the infuriating statements being made by the DCCC. It has never been more important for those of us who are concerned with justice to come together and insist that strong support for reproductive rights be a non-negotiable part of any progressive platform.

Will you stand with me and with DFA members across the country by co-signing our statement of principles which makes it clear that reproductive rights are a critical part of our movement?

Thanks for standing up for women’s autonomy and freedom.

– Kristina

My daughter is learning about relationship from ‘The Bachelor’

As I watched with my 21-yr old daughter the show “The Bachelor”, I realized that she is learning about dating and relationships from the show.

So, I quickly gave my short advice at each commercial. She is so engrossed at the beautiful settings and drama and tried to absorb every word uttered by the cast.

I know that as her mother, I can only speak about my experiences and what I believed is the reality.

How many women are watching “The Bachelor” and in some ways impacting their lives, in dreams or in reality?

I told my daughter that at times, women choose with her brain and at times with her feelings at the moment and then, she wakes up in the realization that what she wanted is real happiness and not short term happiness.

I like that the Bachelorette is a lawyer and like most women, with education or not, knows that feelings some times clutter our minds and affect how we make the right decisions.

She is articulate but when it comes to removing the obvious with what matter most, like many women we are affected by the candy in front of us.

So I told my daugther that in real life, one must be true to her principles and that the true prince charming will offer valuable gifts and make an effort to show his love and as a true measure of his love.

Stevens–Johnson syndrome and supplementation after healing

Stevens–Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a type of severe skin reaction. Together with toxic epidermal necrolysis(TEN) it forms a spectrum of disease, with SJS being less severe. Early symptoms include fever and flu-like symptoms. A few days later the skin begins to blister and peel forming painful raw areas. Mucous membranes, such as the mouth, are also typically involved. Complications include dehydrationsepsispneumonia, and multiple organ failure.[2]

The most common cause is certain medications such as lamotriginecarbamazepineallopurinolsulfonamide antibiotics, and nevirapine.[2] Other causes can include infections such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae and cytomegalovirus or the cause may remain unknown.[1][2] Risk factors include HIV/AIDS and systemic lupus erythematosus. The diagnosis is based on involvement of less than 10% of the skin.[1] It is known as TEN when more than 30% of the skin is involved and an intermediate form with 10 to 30% involvement.[3] Erythema multiforme (EM) is generally considered a separate condition.[4]

Treatment typically takes place in hospital such as in a burn unit or intensive care unit. Efforts may include stopping the cause, pain medicationantihistaminesantibioticsintravenous immunoglobulins, or corticosteroids.[1] Together with TEN it affects 1 to 2 people per million per year.[2] It is twice as common in males as females. Typical onset is under the age of 30. Skin usually regrows over two to three weeks; however, complete recovery can take months.

Connie’s comments:

My friend’s daughter survived Stevens–Johnson syndrome but her eyes need care so my opthalmologist doctor friend, Dr Tearse recommended this supplementation which targets gene expression and in some people bring back their youth:

Colon and rectal cancer incidence is rising among Gen X and millennials

Earlier this year, researcher Rebecca Siegel of the American Cancer Society published a startling report showing that colon and rectal cancer incidence is rising among Gen X and millennials while falling in older generations.

On Tuesday, after delving further into the data, she and her co-authors identified “a true and perplexing escalation in disease occurrence.” In a paper in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, they report that deaths from colorectal cancer are increasing for young and middle-aged Americans — though the increase appears, at least so far, to be confined to white men and women.

The U.S. mortality rate for colorectal cancer for ages 20 to 54 fell from 6.3 per 100,000 in 1970 to 3.9 in 2004. It then began to go up by 1 percent annually. By 2014, the rate was 4.3 per 100,000.

Breaking the numbers out by race reveals the  trend, with the outlook becoming better for blacks and people of other races but not for whites.

The mortality rate for whites had been declining for decades, but it began to climb starting in 2004, going from 3.6 per 100,000 to 4.1 per 100,000 in 2014. For blacks, it went down to 6.1 per 100,000 in 2014. While that’s still higher than for whites, the trend is heading in the right direction. For other races, mortality rates declined until 2006 and remained stable through 2014.

Siegel noted that the racial patterns are “inconsistent” with trends in major risk factors for colorectal cancer. These include obesity, which is increasing among all races and would suggest colorectal cancer rates should be going up among all races, too.

The mortality rate for white Americans declined for a number of years but began to rise again in 2004. In comparison, the rates for black Americans has declined. (JAMA)

The data, which encompass almost  250,000 people, come from the National Center for Health Statistics and information it collects from death certificates. They raise more questions on whether the country’s screening standards should be revisited. Current guidelines call for regular screening for colorectal cancer to begin at age 50.

The analysis of mortality rates contained another surprise: They are also rising for white men and women in their 50s despite the actual cancer incidence decreasing and screening recommended for this age group for decades. In contrast, the mortality rates for blacks in their 50s has declined since 1993.

I am the go to caregiver for hospice bay area senior clients

I meet them when they are terminally ill. They still talk but weak. I touch their feet, dry nails and sometimes with fungus. As I massage their chest with eucalyptus oil, they take their few breaths while attached to their oxygen. I also massage their stomach as they lay their hands on it and controlling the pain. Some of them hide their pain from their love ones.

During the last days, half their bodies are so weak so you tell when their eyes are not equally open and their heads leaning more on the left as if a heavy weight is on their right side.

They smile as I massage their body thankful of the human touch.

Their moaning at night tell a battle of cancer bugs inside winning. They are sweating from the fight as their lower legs becoming cold, their upper body still warm.

I say a prayer and they respond with me as we say the word “Amen”.
