To downsize or not and in need of home care in bay area
To downsize or not and in need of home care in bay area
Many seniors are in a dilemma to downsize or not considering the cost of living in the bay area. Health wise, seniors are not mobile as they used to be. In case of any medical emergency, they need to act fast and be close to a hospital or health care facility. Many emergencies happen during the night and early morning and signs and symptoms cannot easily be detected by family members.
The cost of houses in the bay area skyrocketed that it is common sense to sell an expensive home and live in a small unit and use the sale of the house for health care costs and retirement income.
Many young couples opted for smaller affordable homes to be able to have enough money for other important expenses.
It is sad that many families in the bayarea are spending half of their income on house rent. Many older generation plans to move out of the bay area to downsize and spend their retirement money wisely.
In care homes, many seniors have sold their homes to pay for nursing homes.
In the bay area, half of the jobs are contractual and families have to move from city to city to find an affordable place to live.
Some of those who stayed prefer their parents, who are now grandparents, to care for their babies and waiting for the time when they do not need babysitter to move away from expensive houses in the bay area.
Many take two jobs and spend less time with family to pay for house rent.
Others use every room in their house as rental income to supplement their income and pay for mortgage or get extra retirement income.
Others use airbnb or live in a rented room while they have their house being rented out for income.
What will you do to afford the housing costs in the bay area? Email motherhealth@gmail.com

Weakened Adrenal Glands and Fatigue: A “Roadmap” in the Iris by Dr Bernard Jensen
It seems that in this day and age with all of our modern conveniences, people are more stressed than they have ever been before. This stress is taking a toll on our precious adrenal glands that faithfully produce adrenaline to help give us energy. Under stress, however, the adrenal glands become overworked, excessive amounts of adrenaline are produced, minerals are drained from the body and the body becomes acidic. Acids then drain calcium from the bones and tissues causing a myriad of illnesses including inflammation and osteoporosis. Excessive adrenaline also produces extra insulin that results in hypoglycemia and eventually diabetes. In order to break this vicious cycle, we need to stop and learn about the function of our adrenal glands and what we can do to keep them functioning in a balanced, healthy manner throughout each day of our lives.
What are the Adrenal Glands and What Do They Do?
The adrenal glands are small, yellow masses of tissue that are triangular in shape and true to their name (ad means near and renal means kidney) are situated on top of each kidney in the lower back. They are part of the endocrine system that is made up of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream.
Each adrenal gland is divided into two parts. The outer region is called the adrenal cortex and the inner core, the adrenal medulla. The functions of the adrenal cortex are absolutely necessary to life. The adrenal cortex is divided into three zones that can be seen under a microscope. The outer zone secretes a hormone called aldosterone,
which helps to maintain blood pressure and blood volume by inhibiting the amount of sodium excreted in the urine. The middle and inner zones work together and secrete several important hormones including hydrocortisone, corticosterone and androgen. Hydrocortisone or cortisol regulates metabolism and controls the way the body utilizes carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
Cortisol promotes the production of glucose from amino acids and fats in the liver. This ensures adequate fuel supplies for the cells when the body is under stress.
Hydrocotisone and corticosterone help to suppress inflammatory reactions and regulate the immune system. They will act to suppress the immune system if it becomes overly reactive. Hydrocortisone counteracts inflammation, pain and swelling of the joints in arthritis and bursitis.
Within the inner core of each adrenal gland is the adrenal medulla. Its tissue develops from nerve tissue and it is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, the body’s first line of defense against stress. It secretes the hormones, epinephrine or adrenaline and norepinephrine or noradrenaline in response to sympathetic nerve stimulation. Epinephrine and norepinephrine bring about all the responses necessary for the “fight or flight” response.
People have been known to perform amazing feats like lifting a heavy piece of furniture out of a burning house or lifting a car to free a child trapped underneath. The adrenal glands work together with other hormone producing glands that are regulated by the pituitary and hypothalamus in the brain.
Bodily Indications of Adrenal Imbalance:
There are several bodily signs that one can observe for adrenal fatigue and exhaustion:
- Vertical ridges on the fingernails
- Red tipped tongue
- Falling hair
- Chronic exhaustion
- Anxiety, nervousness, or panic attacks
- Rapid heartbeat
- Weight gain or weight loss
- Acidity of the saliva and urine (below 7.0 shows acidity within lymph fluids)
- Frequent urination
- Intense craving of sweets or stimulants
- Feeling exhausted in the early morning hours upon awakening and wide awake at night with difficulty sleeping
- Weakened immune system causing frequent illnesses
- Acid reflux and/or indigestion
- Stomach cramping
- Muscular cramping
- Headaches
- Hypoglycemia
- Diabetes

When do you need a caregiver for your homebound senior
When do you need a caregiver for your homebound senior
We need a companion, home helper or caregiver for our 70plus mom and dad who live alone to avoid emergencies, to allow us to function and take care of our bodies too in the same way we care for our parents, to give more quality time to our aging parents and to provide the necessary care (non-medical) such as exercises, walking, massage, assistance in daily living (bathing, feeding, others).
Having an Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease is very challenging. We want to avoid the following when caring for seniors with degenerative disease:
Falls
Many medications have side effects such as dizziness, headaches, feeling tired, contipation and more. When the legs are weak due to health issues and exacerbated by lack of exercise and over medication, fall can happen when there is no assisted device such as cane or rollator, living alone and lack of energy from the body (lack of iron, mental health issues, digestive health issues, lack of sleep, others).
Emergency
Sometimes older adults are addicted to pain killers or other medications when not supervised and can result to emergencies for them and the people around them. Living alone can also exacerbate the issue.
Lack of assistance in daily living leading to more issues
Just having a companion can mean a lot to a senior who lives alone. They need constant interaction and be read to and have someone to walk or exercise or drive around town. Bathing and dressing will be more difficult based on the health condition. Many times during the night, seniors get up or need to be changed (diaper changed) and have to be calmed due to anxiety issues (major issue). Caregivers know that constipation can lead to many more health issues (mental, physical and aggrevation of current health issues). They constantly monitor whether the client is breathing properly, responding well, has appetite, need to be warmed or has a UTI.
Stories from caregivers
One client was told by his doctor that he has only 6 months to live. His caregiver started him on a healthy diet of greens and healthy protein. He lived for 5 more years. You will hear the caregiver talk to him daily, Do you need anything Henry? Are you cold? Do you need your food now?

Confessions of an UBER driver

Confessions of an UBER driver
Meet new people to network with
Meet new people and learn from them. Driving UBer is an easy way to expand your network. Prepare for a card. Help them in some ways you can with your experience, skills and knowledge and learn from them. Driving Uber is more fun if passengers give TIPs. We give tips to our waiters and other service pros, we should treat our Uber drivers the same who might be working two jobs to send their children to college. Start the conversation. Praise them of good things they do or their appearance for example. Make friends.
Map/City Knowledge
Riders want to be sure you’re following the best route. It helps to:
* Ask if the rider has a preferred route
* Always use GPS until you know the city well (remember to press BEGIN TRIP after you enter the destination)
Knowing your location and understanding how to use Google map or related app in your smart phone can make your passenger at ease. In the Android phone app, click on the N (circled N true north) to change it to a red arrow and click RE-Center to display at detailed direction on the map with arrows facing to the direction where you are driving.
Asking the passenger the easier and safer place to drive is ok but some of them might think that you do not know where to go.
Professionalism
Riders count on Uber for a comfortable, relaxing experience. They prefer for drivers not to promote other businesses during the trip
Starting/Ending Trips On Time
Riders give lower ratings if they think they were overcharged. Here’s how to avoid that:
* Only press BEGIN TRIP after the rider is in the car and you enter the destination into your GPS (if you use it)
* Press END TRIP as soon as you drop the rider off, or if you make a mistake on your route
Where to position your car with most passengers
Check out the surge areas in red in your Uber partner app and the Uber passenger app for where most Uber drivers are. Caltrain, main city, hotels, schools and shopping centers are where you can find more passengers. Wake up early morn and be close to the neighborhood around 5mile and up radius to the airport. It is cheaper to get an UBER to travel to and from the airport. One of my passenger who lives in San Francisco said that she have saved more than $6000 per year using the CALTRAIN and UBER. She loves UBER.
Turn sad trips to happy ones
There are passengers who only gives you few minutes to drive to the airport to catch their flight. Bring a happy disposition and find opportunities hidden in this sad time of rushing and working each day. I stretch early morn and do my belly breaths and pray for a safe trip. Do not rush, you will get to your destination and keep a happy spirit always.
Be Safe
Remind yourself that safety is your priority. Keeping Your Client Safe In order to comply with the law and to ensure that users of the Uber app have a safe experience:
- Never execute an illegal or unsafe U turn to pick up or drop off your client.
- When picking up or dropping off your client, find a safe, convenient location. Never stop in traffic or at a red zone.
- If you use navigation, minimize distraction. Input destination only while the car is stopped.
- You may request that your client refrain from any unsafe or illegal activity. If your client does not comply with polite and reasonable requests, you can end the trip and drop your client at the nearest safe location. Contact Uber to explain what happened.
