About Leucine
Leucine is utilized in the liver, adipose tissue, and muscle tissue. In adipose and muscle tissue, leucine is used in the formation of sterols, and the combined usage of leucine in these two tissues is seven times greater than its use in the liver.
Leucine is the only dietary amino acid that has the capacity to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. As a dietary supplement, leucine has been found to slow the degradation of muscle tissue by increasing the synthesis of muscle proteins in aged rats. However, results of comparative studies are conflicted. Long-term leucine supplementation does not increase muscle mass or strength in healthy elderly men. More studies are needed, preferably those which utilize an objective, random sample of soceity.

All about wrinkles, anti-aging regimen

Of course everyone ages, but the way in which your skin ages is very much under your control. Here are 4 lifestyle changes you can start to make right now:

   1. Get your beauty sleep…on your back. Over time, a nightly face plant into your pillow will cause those pillow creases to become permanently etched into your skin. Train yourself to get off your side and sleep on your back.

2. No smoking, or quit if you do. It makes you look a decade older than you actually are. Smoking breaks down collagen, impairs wound healing and restricts blood vessels, resulting in sagging, sallow and course skin.

3. Don’t drink from a straw. The puckering associated with drinking from a straw has been observed to increase wrinkling around the lips.

4. Keep those eyes covered. Sunglasses are a must, everyday, no matter how cloudy it is.

Replenish the depleted carbs after sports or strength exercise

pws_sports_recoverygraphic

A period of 48hrs is required to replenish the depleted carbohydrates stores from a strength workout. 2-3x a week strength workout with no more than an hour per session allows the muscles enough time to recover. Performing any more than 3 sessions per week can gradually become counterproductive due to a catabolic effect. This occurs when the demands placed on the muscles have exceeded the recovery ability.

Toddlers constipated from whole milk, what to do

  1. Wiggle it out. As soon      as you insert the glycerin suppository, wiggle it a bit, which stimulates      the tense rectal muscles to relax and eases the passage of the hard      stools.
  2. Insert liquid glycerin. Liquid      glycerin (Babylax) may be gently inserted by dropping it into baby’s      rectum, which often stimulates a bowel movement.
  3. Use natural laxatives. When      using a laxative, try the most natural first. Begin with diluted prune      juice (with pulp), a tablespoon or two for the six- month-old and as much      as eight ounces for the toddler. Try strained prunes or make a prune puree      (stew your own or buy commercial), either straight or disguised (mixed      with a favorite food), or spread it on a high-fiber cracker. Apricots and      the four P’s – prunes, pears, plums, and peaches – usually exert a      laxative effect. If these seem insufficient, here are other ideas to try:
    • Psyllium husks       (basically, very fine flakes of psyllium bran, available at nutrition       stores) are a natural-fiber stool softener. This bland laxative is served       sprinkled on cereal or combined with a fruit-and-yogurt mixture.

Dosage of psyllium:
Adults: Begin with one teaspoon and increase to one tablespoon once a day as needed.
Toddlers and children: Begin with one teaspoon a day and increase to two teaspoons a day as needed.

Be sure to take psyllium with an eight-ounce glass of water. For this concentrated fiber to work the intestines need lots of fluid; otherwise, psyllium can “gum up” in the intestines and actually increase the constipation. You can also mix psyllium powder in a smoothie. Psyllium is also available over-the-counter as Metamucil.

  1. Nonprescription laxatives, such as      Malt-supex (a malt-barley extract) or Metamucil (psyllium powder), may      soften your child’s stools.
    • Flax oil is a favorite. A healthy       alternative to mineral oil is flax oil, which not only has laxative       properties, but is a valuable source of omega 3 fats as well. (Although       you may hear that mineral oil is a good oil to relieve constipation,       because it is a mixture of hydrocarbons dried from petroleum products, I       have never been convinced of its safety. And, unlike flax oil, it       certainly has no nutritional benefits.) Unlike mineral oil, which slides       through the intestines, possibly taking vitamins with it, flax oil is a       nutrient that facilitates absorption of the vitamins.

Dosage of flax oil:
Infants: one teaspoon a day
Toddlers: two teaspoons a day
Children and adults: one tablespoon a day

    • Flax seed meal (ground       flax seeds) is an even a better laxative than flax oil since it contains       fiber. They look similar to finely ground bran flakes and mix well with       soupy cereal, or even better, added to a high-fiber smoothie .

Dosage of flax seed meal:
Toddlers: one tablespoon a day
Older children and adults: two tablespoons a day

    • Stool-Ade – Make a smoothie. See Dr.       Sears’ School-Ade       recipe which also doubles as Stool-Ade. An easy way to get lots of fiber       and laxative foods into your child is by making a stool-softening       smoothie

Connie’s comments:

Mothers before us have used olive oil, coconut oil and sesame oil in rice soup for toddlers.  I will try exercise, a soak in Epsom salts bath, massage, and others-relaxing ways with running water in the background.  I will also try changing formulas and more on baby foods veggies home-made mashed foods. I will also try diluted senna tea with maple syrup.

One of my favorite American poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, tells us: “He that respects himself is safe from others; he wears a coat of mail that none can pierce.” When we truly respect and love ourselves, it’s as if we have a shield of flexible armor made of metal rings and loops of chain that protects us.

The Food Is Broken, Not You by David Hogg, ND

Naturopathic Wisdom

The human body is thousands of years old, and was designed to digest naturally grown foods. With all the diseases that have been diagnosed in the past few decades and new ones more recently, our bodies are suddenly and most certainly not broken. Our food has been changed over the past few decades to the point of not being able to be digested. With genetic engineered foods, colorings, flavorings, preservatives, toxins, heavy metals, xenoestrogens, and synthetically produced foods, it is no wonder our bodies are creating a myriad of diseases. Have I left anything out?

Basic Rules of Thumb When Choosing What Goes In Your Body
1. If a bug does not want to eat your food, neither do you. Bugs know what is digestible more than we do these days.
2. Eat food that only came from or ate from the earth. I have never seen a package picked from a tree. This also means avoiding feedlot fed foul and meats.
3. In grocery stores, shop only from the produce, fish, or meat sections. Therefore, stay out of the isles at all possible.
4. Avoid packaged and processed foods. Make your own, because it is the only way your know it is clean of chemicals.
5. Shop at farmers markets. The produce you buy there was recently picked from the ground.
6. Buy only organic foods. If what you are wanting to buy is not labeled as organic, it may have all or any of the unnatural qualities listed above.

Becoming Healthy Again Means Getting Back to Nature
Eating from the earth and going out in nature is how we become healthy and how we are going to survive the chronic diseases of today. It is a simple concept, but difficult for many because we have been so conditioned to buy our food already packaged, cooked and served to us. Some things you can do are; learn to cook your own food, get outside in nature at least weekly, drink filtered water and not from plastic, and many others. Start slow, and before you know it, you will be feeling better, and living a more healthy life.

Connie’s comments: Those who have been eating a healthy diet coming from an unhealthy one find it unappetizing to eat the old regimen of unhealthy eating. They said they would never be eating junk again since they feel more life and energy in their bodies. I know of some stories where ants died eating EQUAL sugar and dogs died eating a tsp of MSG. Sometimes if you are allergic to some foods, these foods are not being accepted by your body. Hives and other respiratory and skin reactions are signals that the food is clogging your body. Many elderly clients have been gulping on milk, that their airways are always congested and they easily get sick but once they stopped drinking milk, they get healed.

Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) Seed is rich in nutritional values.
Monosaccharides (single molecule sugars) in the form of glucose, rhamnose, xylose, and arabinose are found in the black seed.
The Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) Seed contains a non-starch polysaccharide component which is a useful source of dietary fiber.
It is rich in fatty acids, particularly the unsaturated and essential fatty acids (Linoleic and Linolenic acid). The EFAs, consisting of alpha-Linolenic acid (omega-3) and Linoleic acid (omega-6), are substances that cannot be manufactured in the body, and thus must be taken in as supplements or through high-EFA foods in order to sustain health.
Fifteen amino acids make up the protein content of the Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) Seed, including eight of the nine essential amino acids. Essential amino acids cannot be synthesized within our body in sufficient quantities and are thus required from our diet.
Black seed contains Arginine which is essential for infant growth.
Chemical analysis has further revealed that the Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) Seed contains carotene, which is converted by the liver into vitamin A.
The Black Cumin (Nigella sativa) (black cumin, Roman coriander, back carawy, nutmeg flower) Seed is also a source of calcium, iron, sodium, and potassium. Required only in small amounts by the body, these elements’ main function is to act as essential cofactors in various enzyme functions.

The secret 4-hr diet to lose weight for the working person

For the working person, do an every other day veggie cleanse and protein shake during meal time and a veggie broth during snack time. If a veggie broth is not available, mix two kinds of tea (no black tea, decaffeinated) with a tsp of honey, maple syrup or cranberries jam and/or aloe vera juice, coconut water or light cranberry drink (diluted cranberry juice in water). During the regular days of regular meal, include as much raw food and fiber in your diet. Example of a lunch meal would be 2 TB of tuna, asparagus, yam with skin, and salad (olive oil as dressing). By 1pm after your lunch, walk for 30min with a hat and sunglasses. Make a statement, wear colorful outfit and hat and a smile to each one you meet and strike a conversation.

Do use various kinds of herbs for seasoning. Chewing every 3 hrs creates the necessary enzymes for digestion and resting for an hr. Do not chew gums instead of eating your meal since this will generate more acid without any food in your stomach. A good bowel of 2-3 times a day is indicative of good health.

In the absence of a regular meal, cheat by chewing a few bites to a spoonful of yam with skin, banana, apple, half boiled egg (hormone free), small seeds and nuts and for snack, a cup of veggie broth. In the early morning that you are feeling hungry, prepare a drink warm water with half a tsp of honey, maple syrup or cranberries jam and then an hr later a protein shake, half a serving of one packet. Take your acidophilus, digestive enzymes and protein powder (can be ordered at http://www.clubalthea.myshaklee.com or home-made prepared using brown rice powder or organic soy) in the morning.

For those who wake up in the middle of the night or early morning, snack on peanut butter or almond butter with saltine crackers. Nutritional supplements is a must for adults 40+: essential oils with higher Omega 3, DHA, EFA, Vit C, Vit B, Vit D, Vit E and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc (taken in the afternoon). Liquid iron (vegetable based) in the morning would help those who are vegan.

Please share this info to others, for this info should not be a secret anymore and to save lives.

Connie’s comments: I just visited a senior client who lives by herself in Mt View and who needs a 24/7 caregiver since she goes for dialysis 3 times a week. She had lost weight and is on a diet to clean her body from the many years of eating the regular American diet of processed and not whole foods. She is now 78 yrs old and finding joy in eating healthy food, gourmet food prepared by her caregiver. It is not too late, do not fill your body with sugar and processed food so that you can live a healthy life, with freedom to go and explore the world and not be confined to your bed, house or wheelchair.

A healthy 43 yr old male coworker received a call from a friend after a yr of not hearing from him. He told him that his cancer was gone and thanked him for his advice to eat only whole foods and to get some sunshine.

Many people who had lost weight still maintained a glowing and beautiful skin, since healthy weight loss includes a detox so that your skin releases toxins thru sweat and dead cells. No botox or chemical peel needed with the Reverse regimen at http://www.clubalthea.myrandf.com

Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time

The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window.
“I love it,” she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.
“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room …. just wait.”
“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged…it’s how I arrange my mind.

Late night sleep disrupts young brain development especially girls

Irregular bedtimes may disrupt healthy brain development in young children, according to a study of intelligence and sleeping habits.

Going to bed at a different time each night affected girls more than boys, but both fared worse on mental tasks than children who had a set bedtime, researchers found.

The effect was most striking in three year olds, where boys and girls scored lower on reading, maths and spatial skills tests than children of the same age who kept to a more rigid schedule.

Scientists at University College London said the lack of routine might impair early development by disrupting the body clock, or through sleep deprivation, which affects the brain’s ability to remember and learn new information.

“Age three seems to be where you see the largest effect and that is a concern,” said Amanda Sacker, professor of lifecourse studies at UCL.

“If a child is having irregular bedtimes at a young age, they’re not synthesising all the information around them at that age, and they’ve got a harder job to do when they are older. It sets them off on a more difficult path,” she added.

While the differences in test scores were modest – only a few points in many cases – irregular bedtimes throughout childhood appeared to have a cumulative effect, leading to greater problems later on.

Sacker and her colleagues drew on information in the UK Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), a long-term record of UK children who are now in or approaching their early teenage years. They looked at how the children’s performance fared on tests at various ages, and whether bedtime had any impact.

Parents who took part in the MCS were asked whether their children went to bed at a regular time on weekdays. Those who answered “always” or “usually” were put in the regular bedtime group in Sacker’s study, while those who answered “sometimes” or “never” were put in the irregular bedtime group.

The hour that children went to bed had little or no effect on their performance on different tests, including basic number skills, reading out word cards, and constructing designs from flat or solid shapes. But having no set bedtime often led to lower scores. The greatest dip in test results was seen in girls who had no set bedtime throughout early life, at three, five and seven years old. The study found the same for boys who had irregular bedtimes at any two of these ages.

Writing in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, the authors suggest that irregular bedtimes affect the brain’s “plasticity”, or ability to store and learn new information. “Sleep is the price we pay for plasticity on the prior day and the investment needed to allow fresh learning the next day,” the authors write. “Early child development has profound influences on health and wellbeing across the life course. Therefore, reduced or disrupted sleep, especially if it occurs at key times in development, could have important impacts on health throughout life.,”

Scent medical device detects bladder cancer

Unlike some cancers, bladder cancer can be tricky to detect, as there are  currently no reliable biomarkers clinicians can use for screening patients.

Now, researchers from the University of Liverpool and the University of the  West of England in Bristol have manufactured a device that could make the  detection of bladder cancer much easier and more reliable.

But rather than rely on detecting proteins related to the cancer, the machine  relies on something else entirely – the scent of the patient’s urine.

Aptly named the ODOREADER®, the device operates similarly to a small  microwave, in that a clinician can take a sample of a patient’s urine and place  it into the machine.  Then, the clinician flips a switch, and an interior  sensor analyzes the gases emitted by the urine.

According to lead researcher Dr. Chris Probert, a gastroenterologist for the  University of Liverpool’s Institute of Translational Medicine, urine and feces  will sometimes smell differently during certain disease situations. This  prompted Probert and his colleagues to look at certain smells associated with  the superbug C. difficile, which causes patients’ feces to have a very pungent  aroma.

The idea to utilize this kind of scent analysis originated out of a  combination of this research and previous studies using scent detection dogs to  identify cancer.

“In a paper reported about 10 years ago, researchers used trained dogs to  recognize the smell of urine with people with bladder cancer,” Probert told  FoxNews.com.  “They trained the dogs in a typical ‘Pavlov-ian’ way, giving  them a reward when they smelled the scent of urine from bladder cancer  patients…The dogs were quite good, but they didn’t get it (right) as often as  our machine gets it right.”

While the scientists do not yet know the specific gas compounds associated  with bladder cancer, their machine uses an advanced algorithm to produce a  chemical “profile” of the urine sample.

“It produces a graphic, and it’s quite easy to see,” Probert said.  “We  give two examples of people with cancer and two examples of those without, and  the (graph) shape is just different.  The shapes of the lines are dictated  by gasses coming off the urine.”

Current screening methods for bladder cancer involve looking for associated  proteins or cells shed from the lining of the bladder in at-risk populations –  such as people who work with insulation or rubber.  However, these  biomarkers can only detect the cancer with 50 to 80 percent accuracy.  Out  of 98 urine samples – 24 from patients known to have cancer and 74 from patients  with urological symptoms but no cancer – the ODOREADER was able to correctly  identify the cancer patients 100 percent of the time.

Bladder cancer is one of the more common forms of cancer, with more than  72,000 new cases diagnosed in the United States each year, according to the  American Cancer Society.  Most cases are diagnosed during the early stages  of the disease, when the cancer is treatable.  However, once cured,  patients typically have to undergo yearly screenings for the rest of their  lives, since bladder cancer is likely to reoccur.  This involves undergoing  a cystoscopy, an endoscopy of the bladder through the urethra.

Given the good results from their new device, Probert hopes to replace this  type of test with the ODOREADER for future patients.

“Cystoscopy is a very unpleasant procedure and quite embarrassing,” Probert  said.  “…There’s a lot of anxiety and stress involved.  We’d like to  replace that with a urine test that could at the very least stratify the patient  into low-risk or high-risk.  So the patients who don’t need to have that  extra test done can come back and have a urine sample analyzed.”

Probert noted that while they are working hard to get their device into  clinics, they will continue to search for a definitive gas compound found in  urine of patients with bladder cancer.

“Potentially we can drill down into the (graphic) shape and say, ‘What are  the gasses in that part?’” Probert said. “What compound is the machine  detecting?  And then we can link that compound with what is abnormal with  that cancer.”

The research is published in the most recent edition of the journal PLOS  ONE.

Hair Loss/Weight Loss, herbs for allergies, drug side-effects, herbs with caution, chemo Q&A

Stress, drug toxicity, allergies, fungus, bacteria, disease, genes and many other factors contribute to hair loss. Nutrients for hair include Aloe Vera, biotin, Vit C, B, A, D, and E.

Aloe vera has a long history of popular and traditional use. It is used in traditional Indian medicine for constipation, colic, skin diseases, worm infestation, and infections (Heber 2007). It is also used in Trinidad and Tobago for hypertension (Lans 2006) and among Mexican Americans for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM; Coronado et al. 2004). In Chinese medicine, it is often recommended in the treatment of fungal diseases (Heber 2007). In Western society, Aloe vera is one of the few herbal medicines in common usage, and it has found widespread use in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries. In the case of health, the therapeutic claims for the topical and oral application of Aloe vera cover a wide range of conditions, but few claims have been the subject of robust clinical investigation. The conditions for which clinical trials of Aloe vera have been conducted include skin conditions, management of burn and wound healing, constipation, DM, and gastrointestinal disorders.

I heard some herbal formulas can be used to treat the side effects of chemotherapy. Is that true?
Herbs like Astragalus have immunomodulating effects. They have been studied in humans and have been shown to help reduce some of the adverse reactions induced by chemotherapy. However, they are not appropriate for all patients and larger clinical trials are needed to confirm their safety and efficacy.

I have peripheral neuropathy following chemotherapy. Is there a natural treatment to relieve my symptoms?
Several nutritional supplements, such as glutamine, glutathione, vitamin Bs, vitamin E and alpha-lipoic acid, have been tested as treatments for peripheral neuropathy. Early clinical trials indicate that glutamine may reduce the incidence and severity of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. Preliminary studies show that acupuncture can reduce pain and improve nerve function and sensation, and can help relieve peripheral neuropathy associated with chemotherapy. But larger studies are needed to confirm these effects.

Are there any herbs that can help my hair grow back?
Hair loss is a common adverse effect from chemotherapy. Most patients’ hair will grow back after discontinuing treatment. Currently, there is no evidence that herbs can help regrow hair.
What is good for “dry mouth”?Many patients may experience xerostomia (dry mouth) after surgery or radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Prescription drugs can be used to help relieve this symptom but they are often associated with other side effects. Currently, there is convincing evidence that acupuncture can be used to address this symptom safely and effectively. Patients can consult with a qualified practitioner for more information.
What are phytoestrogens?

These are herbs that have estrogen-like activities. A few popular examples include soy, red clover, flaxseed, and dong quai.
I have estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer. Can I take soy products?
The use of soy products by patients with hormone sensitive cancer remains controversial.
Animal studies show that constituents in soy may stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells and increase risk of metastasis. They can also work against tamoxifen, a drug used for estrogen-dependent breast cancer. However, epidemiological data suggest that soy foods help reduce breast cancer risk and have a positive effect on breast cancer survivors. Soy foods also have other health benefits as they are naturally rich in protein and low in fat. Until more is known, many experts agree that moderate consumption of soy foods is acceptable but concentrated soy supplements should be avoided.
Herb-drug Interactions
Do botanicals interfere with the metabolism of drugs?
Yes, many botanicals interfere with the way a drug is processed in the body: Increased metabolism of a drug reduces its concentration in the blood and may reduce its effectiveness; decreased metabolism of a drug increases its concentration in the blood and can lead to toxicity or increased side effects.
I am taking an anticoagulant drug. Why are there so many dietary restrictions?
Anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin, have a very narrow therapeutic range. They can cause adverse effects and are prone to interact with other drugs and dietary supplements. Herbs like ginger, garlic, turmeric can interfere with anticoagulants increasing the risk of bleeding. Certain vegetables rich in vitamin K can decrease the therapeutic effects of warfarin.
What Natural Allergy Remedies Work?
Allergies are caused by the immune system’s overreaction to a harmless substance, such as animal dander or pollen. Like allergy medication, some supplements can help by blocking the chemical reactions that result in allergy symptoms.
Most natural allergy supplements come in capsules, tablets, or liquids, and are available in drugstores or health food stores. A few may be more difficult to find. If you’re in an urban area, you might try a naturopathic physician, an herbalist, or other expert in integrative health. Otherwise, your best bet may be stores on the Internet.
Here’s the rundown.
Butterbur. “Butterbur is the Singulair of the herbal world,” says Rakel. “I think of all the allergy supplements, it has the best evidence behind it.” The herb appears to work as a leukotriene inhibitor, which blocks some chemicals that trigger swelling in the nasal passages.
Some research shows that an extract of butterbur root (Ze 339) are just as effective at relieving nasal symptoms as antihistamines like Zyrtec and Allegra. Butterbur has the advantage of not causing sleepiness, a common side effect of antihistamines, even some so-called “non-sedating antihistamines.” “For someone who is driving a car or flying a plane and really needs to avoid the sedative effects of an allergy medication, butterbur is a good alternative,” Rakel says.
You should not eat raw, unprocessed butterbur root, which is dangerous. Look for brands of specialized butterbur supplements that are labeled UPA-free; a certain percentage or milligrams of the helpful compound petasin may also be mentioned. Keep in mind that experts aren’t sure about the safety of using any butterbur supplements in the long term.
Quercetin. Found in wine and many fruits and vegetables, quercetin may work as a mast cell stabilizer. It helps block the release of histamine that causes inflammation. “Quercetin is sort of the herbal equivalent to cromolyn sodium [in the over-the-counter spray NasalCrom],” Rakel tells WebMD. “The evidence is promising.”
I think quercetin is pretty effective and well tolerated,” says Leopold. “It seems to work well for prevention.” However, while lab tests of quercetin are intriguing, we don’t yet have good research for how well it works as a treatment in people. Some experts doubt that enough quercetin is absorbed during digestion to have much of an effect.
• Stinging Nettle. Often used as an allergy treatment, this botanical contains carotene, vitamin K, and quercetin. There’s some evidence that using stinging nettle after the first sign of allergic symptoms can help a bit. Be sure to choose extracts of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) leaf, not the root, which is used to treat prostate troubles. Despite its common use, however, there’s not much research backing up stinging nettle’s effectiveness as an allergy remedy.
• Bromelain. Some studies have found that bromelain is helpful in reducing nasal swelling and thinning mucus, making it easier for people to breathe. It may be particularly useful when added to drug treatment for sinus infections.
• Phleum pratense. A few studies have found that a sublingual tablet made from pollen extracts from Phleum Phleum pratense can reduce some pollen allergy symptoms, such as eye irritation, in people with asthma, as well as help decrease symptoms in people suffering from hay fever. It also allowed people to reduce the dose of their allergy medicine.
• Tinospora cordifolia. Based on one research study, there’s some indication that Tinospora cordifolia, an herbal tablet from India, can reduce allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and nasal discharge. Again, the evidence is only preliminary and its long-term safety is unclear. Though it appeared safe during the 8-week research study, more research needs to be done.
• Combination allergy supplements. A number of natural allergy remedies contain a blend of botanicals. Leopold singles out Sinupret, a combination of European elderflower, sorrel, cowslip, verbena, and gentian root. “It’s seems to be effective and well tolerated,” he tells WebMD, “especially for conditions like chronic sinusitis, which can result from allergies.” It’s been long used in Europe, and there’s some evidence that it helps treat the symptoms of bronchitis and acute sinusitis.

• Other allergy supplements. People use many other supplements to treat allergies, including echinacea, grape seed extract, pycnogenol (pine bark extract), vitamin C, EPA, honey, cat’s claw, albizzia (Albizzia lebbeck), baical skullcup (Scutellaria baicalensis),goldenseal, and spirulina. However, research hasn’t found good evidence that they help. “These supplements might have other benefits,” says Rakel. “But if you’re trying to treat allergies, go with something else.”
Be particularly wary of bitter orange (also called Citrus aurantium), which is sometimes sold as a decongestant. It has compounds similar to those in ephedra and, as a result, may have serious side effects. They include an increased risk of high blood pressure, heart problems, and stroke.

Herbs with Caution!!!
The dozen are aconite, bitter orange, chaparral, colloidal silver, coltsfoot, comfrey, country mallow, germanium, greater celandine, kava, lobelia, and yohimbe. The FDA has warned about at least eight of them, some as long ago as 1993.
