Sons who are close to their moms are stronger

Freud warned about the unresolved Oedipal complex in boys: Sons who couldn’t break free from a smothering mother’s clutches were doomed to be sexually confused — or even homosexual.

Even Dr. Benjamin Spock, the pediatric guru of the 1950s and 1960s, advised that mama’s boys might grow up “precocious, with feminine interests.”

But now, author Kate Stone Lombardi contends in her new book, “The Mama’s Boy Myth,” that having a close mother-son relationship makes boys stronger and ultimately helps them be better partners and husbands.

Society fears the “blindly adoring mother, the emasculating mother, and the martyred mother,” according to Lombardi, 55, who lives in Chappaqua, N.Y.

“The myth is that any boy close to his mom will be a sissy, a wimp, forever dependent and never a man who can have a healthy relationship,” Lombardi told ABCNews.com. “And it’s everywhere we look, in the movies, on TV.”

In literature, so-called “mama’s boys” have been portrayed either as neurotic killers like the cross-dressing Norman Bates from the film, “Psycho,” or “lust-ridden, mother-addicted” Jewish bachelors like the protagonist in Philip Roth’s “Portnoy’s Complaint.”

Homophobia is one of the “big bogeymen” behind why society is so critical of the mother-son relationship, she writes. “The unspoken fear is that if the mother is too great an influence on the son, she will somehow make him gay.”

But Lombardi said that for this generation of mothers and sons, the stereotypes are simply not true.

A former writer for the New York Times, Lombardi got the idea for the book after wondering why she was uneasy about the close relationship she shared with her own son, Paul, who is now 23.

“From the very beginning I felt a really strong connection — literally when I was in the hospital and put him into my arms,” she said. “I looked at him and recognized him and felt this bond.”

As he got older, “he got my moods and I got his moods. But I thought it was something peculiar to us — that luckily, I had this sweet boy.”

Later, when talking to other mothers, she realized they were not unique, but also that, “no one talks about it.”

She set up a web site to reach other mothers and to learn about their relationships with their sons. More than 1,100 replied to say they, too, were emotionally connected.

Many said that like her, they felt compelled to keep the closeness “secret.”

Historically, mothers have been blamed for anything that goes wrong with a child, according to Lombardi. Schizophrenia and later autism were attributed to maternal mistakes.

She wonders why fathers are spared the same criticism.

“Tellingly, there seems to be much less general angst over the idea that if a father is too influential on his daughter, she might grow up to be a lesbian,” writes Lombardi.

She cites study after study that destroys the notion that motherly love is destructive.

In one 2010 research project, Carlos Santos, a professor at Arizona State University, followed 426 middle-school boys to determine to what extent they bought into traditional masculine roles.

Those who had warm and supportive relationships with their mothers had better tools for communication and lower rates of depression and delinquency than their “tougher” peers.

“These boys had a broader definition of masculinity and didn’t buy into the idea that men had to be stoic and not fight back at every moment,” said Lombardi. “Being close to mom was good for their mental health.”

Mama’s Boys Are Less Aggressive and Troubled

She said research shows that these boys are less susceptible to peer pressure to do drugs and alcohol, and they tend to delay their first sexual experience and have less unprotected sex.

“We don’t know why — if it’s specifically because of the nature of the mother-son communication,” she said. “But dad’s tend to have a big sex talk or big drug talk. Moms weave it into everyday conversation. It’s more subtle and more often.”

Dads are important, too, according to Lombardi. “Parenting is not a zero-sum game,” she said. “You don’t have to be close to one parent and not the other. They both bring something.”

Lombardi said she shares the same closeness with her 26-year-old daughter and her son is close to his father.

She knows readers might deem her relationship with her own son as “deeply inappropriate” and even “creepy” — they are affectionate and even have their own song.

Many other women also described to Lombardi the “love affair” they felt with their boys.

But many, fearing a mother’s love can be a “dangerous influence” close the door on their sons too early.

Some studies suggest boys are more fragile than girls, at least earlier in life. Sometimes that “hearty shove” is premature and can be devastating.

She cites a 2010 study of 6,000 children by psychologist Pasco Fearon of University of Reading that found those boys who were “insecurely attached” to their mothers were more aggressive and hostile in their teen years.

“Sons really need their moms and the last thing they need is withdrawal of support,” she said.

Lombardi insists she doesn’t want to turn boys into girls. “I don’t think they are the same,” she said. “The differences between them will always be.”

But society has changed, and so have cultural constructs of masculinity and femininity.

Lombardi argues that sensitivity, tenderness and the ability to talk about feelings have traditionally been female characteristics, but they just might help boys in the future.

One study from Northeastern University predicts that by 2018, the social sector of the economy will gain at least 6.9 million jobs will require “brains over brawn.”

“Our sons need to be ready for these jobs,” said Lombardi. “They need communication skills and the ability to work in teams and have emotional intelligence.”

Her son, Paul Lombardi, seems to be on the right path now that he is an adult, training to be a teacher in a residency tutor program at a Boston elementary charter school.

“I am the person I am today because of the values she instilled in me and the guidance and love she showed me,” he said of his mother. “It’s definitely unfair and stigmatizing to say a mother and son can’t be close.”

Both admit their relationship has changed over time.

“You don’t treat a 23-year-old the same way as a 5-year-old,” said Paul Lomabardi.

“I still feel like we have a connection,” said his mother. “But I don’t need to know everything that goes on in his life. We are adults now.”

As for the book, Paul Lombardi said there were some surprises when personal anecdotes became public, but nothing too embarrassing.

“She went through the process and vetted with me,” he said. “Like a good mom, she is protective and knows her boundaries.”

Cholesterol levels leveling off and obesity epidemic

Pharmaceutical companies are racing to develop a new class of drugs that may lower blood levels of LDL cholesterol to a point few scientists had believed attainable, The New York Times reported last week. For many people with high cholesterol, the breakthrough can’t come soon enough.

Statins, the miracle drugs responsible for keeping cholesterol in check in wide swaths of the population, may be reaching the limits of their effectiveness. Average cholesterol levels in Americans have stopped falling since 2008, according to a large analysis of patient records published recently in PLoS One.

Researchers at Quest Diagnostics, a national laboratory chain, reviewed blood levels of LDL, the so-called bad cholesterol, in 105 million adults tested by the company between 2001 and 2011. Average LDL levels declined from 120 milligrams per deciliter of blood in 2001 to 104.7 in 2008, about a 13 percent drop.

But in the next three years, average LDL levels flattened out.

An LDL of 100 mg/dL is considered healthy, but experts say people at very high risk of heart disease should bring their levels down even further, to about 70 mg/dL or lower. The percentage of patients with an LDL under 100 mg/dL rose from 26 percent in 2001 to 45.6 percent in 2008, then leveled off. Those with a high LDL of 160 mg/dL or more dropped from 13.7 percent in 2001 to 6 percent in 2011.

The study was not a random sampling; it comprised individuals whose physicians had requested cholesterol tests. Still, the findings have worried experts.

“The study suggests that the progress has slowed in systematically lowering cholesterol levels,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, the chairman of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study.

The authors suggested that these results may affect cardiovascular mortality rates as well. “There has been approximately a 70 percent decrease in cardiovascular disease mortality from 1970 through 2009,” said Dr. Harvey W. Kaufman, senior medical director at Quest Diagnostics and an author of the study. “A large portion of this was driven by the reduction in cholesterol, and this progress is now threatened.”

A combination of factors have brought down LDL levels, including improved diet and exercise. But statins have been a significant driver over the past 25 years.

The study did not look at causes for the plateau, but Dr. Kaufman and his colleagues speculated that the recession may have played a role by influencing patients’ ability to see their physicians and fill their prescriptions for statins. Tough times also may have affected lifestyle factors that can contribute to higher LDL, including stress levels, a high-fat diet and lack of exercise.

The number of prescriptions for statins rose dramatically almost every year since 2001, but the growth slowed in 2010, according to IMS Health, a health care information company. There also was a decline in physician office visits, which means that fewer people are getting their cholesterol tested and treated.

But other experts suggested that LDL levels have flattened out simply because they may be as low as they can go with the available treatments. “We could conceivably be experiencing a bottoming out of the statin effect,” said Dr. Ronald M. Krauss, director of atherosclerosis research at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute in Oakland, Calif.

According to Dr. Elsa-Grace V. Giardina, director of preventive cardiology training at Columbia University Medical Center, “There may be a rapid rate of change at first, and then you get to a threshold point for which you can’t do much more.”

To bring LDL levels lower, physicians may need to increase statin doses, particularly in those who are at high risk of heart disease. “The official recommendation has been to reduce LDL as much as possible, but physicians don’t always adjust statin dose in practice,” Dr. Krauss said. “If it starts off high and it comes down to 100, doctors may be satisfied with that.”

But doctors may also have been reluctant to raise doses because of the risk of serious side effects like muscle pain, weakness and increased blood sugar levels.

The trend is to focus on “therapeutic lifestyle modification, for individuals to have a greater input into their health, rather than just popping a pill,” Dr. Giardina said.

Obesity may also be limiting the effectiveness of statins. “You have to wonder how much obesity is contributing to this plateau,” Dr. Giardina said. Obesity raises the risks of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high triglycerides and diabetes, all risk factors for heart disease.

She believes average cholesterol levels may be higher than the study found: “Excluded in this analysis are disadvantaged people who don’t have health care and among whom obesity is a major problem.”

Even if new drugs are found, the obesity epidemic may blunt their effects.

“We’re now to the point that a very large fraction of the adult population is obese,” Dr. Nissen said. “We will not make any further progress as a society unless we find a way to deal with the obesity epidemic.”

Connie’s Comments: Cheap processed foods and fast foods available to the masses are maybe the culprit of the obesity epidemic. Let’s go to the farmer’s market, plant more veggies in our gardens and eat an apple and banana a day. It only takes a minute to microwave an egg in a mug of water (no shells) and presto you have one boiled egg (cheap and complete protein, no more snacking on empty calories, add a spinach or swiss chard as your carbs). Let the egg be hormone free.

Surviving in the most expensive city in the world, Silicon Valley

Women of all ages and status, divorce, retired couples, young couple with children, single and all kinds in between met last night to share their direct selling business introduction and year in business. They are thankful for the low cost of entry with high profit potential of the direct selling business that they are currently in.
Living in Silicon Valley is financially challenging even for those who have high education status and experienced business owners who were affected by the up and down economy in the valley.

The most common remarks sounding off in the room are that they wanted to earn extra income apart from their 8-5 job, be their own boss, build Plan B just in case they lose their corporate job, afford the flexibility in time, leverage in people and team and enjoying the no glass ceiling of network marketing-direct selling.

With the global business moving to a more networked, community-based social network, many are working part time in the network marketing fields where internet social networking and word of mouth are still the norm.

Be with a strong network marketing company, who can help you reach your goals and be in the global market at short amount of time, with a team of people to support you and with product quality tested by the consumers with high marks.

Kidney disease, an underestimated killer

By Jane Brody

Kidney disease doesn’t get the attention, funding or concern associated with cancers of the breast or prostate. But it actually kills more Americans — 90,000 a year — than both malignancies combined.

Even when it is not fatal, the cost of treating end-stage kidney disease through dialysis or a kidney transplant is astronomical, more than fivefold what Medicare pays annually for the average patient over age 65. The charges do not include the inestimable costs to quality of life among patients with advanced kidney disease.

Much is known about who faces the greatest risks of developing chronic kidney disease and how it can be prevented, detected in its early stages, and treated to slow or halt its progression. But unless people at risk are tested, they are unlikely to know they have kidney disease; it produces no symptoms until it is quite advanced.

Perhaps no one knows this better than Duane Sunwold, 55, a culinary arts instructor at Spokane Community College in Spokane, Wash., whose compromised kidney function was not uncovered until a blood pressure crisis landed him in the hospital. A physician assistant found that abnormal amounts of protein were spilling out in his urine.

Mr. Sunwold, then only 43, was referred to a nephrologist, who diagnosed a condition called minimal-change disease: damage to the tiny blood vessels within the kidney that filter wastes from the blood to make urine. Protein is not supposed to be among those wastes. Although Mr. Sunwold’s personal physician was treating him for high blood pressure, a leading cause of kidney failure, the doctor never checked to see how well his vital organs were functioning.

Such a lapse is hardly uncommon. Kidney disease often is not on the medical radar, and in as many as three-fourths of patients with risk factors for poor kidney function, physicians fail to use a simple, inexpensive test to check for urinary protein.

This fact has turned Mr. Sunwold into a proselytizer with a potentially lifesaving message for 26 million Americans who have kidney disease (many of whom don’t yet know it) and an additional  76 million at high risk of developing it: Make sure your doctor checks the amount of protein in your urine at least once a year.

After his diagnosis, Mr. Sunwold brought all his risk factors under control and succeeded in improving his kidney function. He offers tips online and recipes for good kidney health, which are also good for the heart, diabetes and weight control.

A study published in April online in The American Journal of Kidney Disease demonstrated how common lifestyle factors can harm the kidneys. Researchers led by Dr. Alex Chang of Johns Hopkins University followed more than 2,300 young adults for 15 years. Participants were more likely to develop kidney disease if they smoked, were obese or had diets high in red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened drinks and sodium, but low in fruit, legumes, nuts, whole grains and low-fat dairy.

Only 1 percent of participants with no lifestyle-related risk factors developed protein in their urine, an early indicator of kidney damage, while 13 percent of those with three unhealthy factors developed the condition, known medically as proteinuria. Obesity alone doubled a person’s risk of developing kidney disease; an unhealthy diet raised the risk even when weight and other lifestyle factors were taken into account.

Overall, the risk was highest among African-Americans; those with diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of kidney disease; and those who consumed more soft drinks, red meat and fast food.

In commenting on the study,  Dr. Beth Piraino, president of the National Kidney Foundation, said, “We need to shift the focus from managing chronic kidney disease to preventing it in the first place.”

Which is exactly the approach Mr. Sunwold has adopted. “I had been feeling like I had the flu — bone-tired, exhausted all the time,” he said. “I’m now a wannabe vegan. Meat makes up less than 5 percent of my diet. In just two weeks after changing my diet to one that is plant-based, I really felt much better.”

He also swims laps every day and maintains his 6-foot frame at 180 pounds. His kidney function, which is now normal, is checked every three months, and he religiously takes medication to control his blood pressure.

Dr. Leslie Spry, director of the Dialysis Center of Lincoln in Nebraska and another online proselytizer for a kidney-healthy lifestyle, noted that people with high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes or obesity who manage to avoid a heart attack or stroke remain at risk for kidney disease, which he likened to the third rail.

Having just one risk factor raises the chances of developing kidney disease from one in 10 to one in three, Dr. Spry said.

A family history of kidney disease is not the only genetic risk. In addition to African-Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian-Americans and American Indians are more likely than white Americans to develop kidney disease.

“People can’t change their genetics,” Dr. Spry said in an interview. “But I wouldn’t have to work so hard if they didn’t smoke, reduced their salt intake, ate more fresh fruits and vegetables, and increased their physical activity. These are things people can do for themselves. They involve no medication.”

He also urges everyone with any risk factor for kidney disease to be screened annually with inexpensive urine and blood tests. That includes everyone 65 and older, for whom the cost is covered by Medicare. Free testing is also provided by the National Kidney Foundation for people with diabetes.

The urine test can pick up abnormal levels of protein, which is supposed to stay in the body, compared with the amount of creatinine, a waste product that should be excreted. The blood test, called an eGFR (for estimated glomerular filtration rate), measures how much blood the kidneys filter each minute, indicating how effectively they are functioning.

Anyone found to have kidney disease should be referred to a nephrologist, a specialist who can work with the family physician to control the disease.

Two medications commonly used to treat high blood pressure can often halt or delay the progression of kidney disease in people with diabetes: angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Careful control of blood sugar levels also protects the kidneys from further damage.

———-Connie’s comments:
The kidneys function best on a low protein, high fiber and high antioxidant diet, that protects against inflammation and provides optimal nutritional support. Top foods that are beneficial for kidney functioning include bell peppers, onions, garlic, cranberries, cauliflower and olive oil. These foods are all naturally anti-inflammatory and many have beneficial compounds that inhibit infections within the urinary tract that can lead to kidney complications.

Cancer toll of CT Scans

Each year more than four million CT scans are performed on children, and they are increasing the risk for future cancer, a new study suggests.

Researchers writing online last month in JAMA Pediatrics counted the number of CT scans performed on children under 15 from 1996 to 2010 in seven American health care systems, and calculated the average dose of radiation delivered to the head, abdomen, chest or spine.

There was wide variability, but the scientists found that up to a quarter of children with a single abdominal scan received 20 millisieverts or higher. (The average dose for a chest X-ray is 0.1 millisievert.)

The researchers estimate that one year’s CT scanning in the United States would produce 4,879 future cancers in children under 15 — a small but significant increase.

The researchers calculate that if the highest doses — those in the top one-quarter — could be reduced to match the average dose, future cancers would be reduced by 43 percent.

The lead author, Diana L. Miglioretti, a professor of biostatistics at the University of California, Davis, recommends that parents ask questions: How will a scan change my child’s medical care? Are there other tests that can be used?

“If the doctor says he needs the CT,” Dr. Miglioretti said, “then the parent should ask, ‘What are you doing to make sure the dose is as low as possible?’”

Liver cleanse to help your vision and memory

One of the ways to tell if you have a liver problem is the yellow color in your eyes, insomnia, constipation and chronic fatigue.

Healthy warm tonic drink for liver and eyes: add a pinch of ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, roobois tea, lemon, pineapple to your favorite drink or soup.

Statistics: Average age of cataract patient is between 65 and 70 with 12% of global population is age 60 or older. There are nearly 22 million cataract surgeries performed globally in 2013.

In addition to age, other factors may increase the risk of cataract development. These include:
• Diabetes
• Smoking
• Overexposure to sunlight (protect your eyes with sunglasses or hats)
• Certain medications, such as steroids

The liver is our body’s most important organ after the heart, performing many important functions including metabolism, detoxification, and formation of important compounds including blood clotting factors. It also filters, regulates, and stores blood. Stress, poor diet, and over-medication are common problems in our “civilized” lifestyle. These may lead to stress and functional damage to the liver. As a result, “sluggish” liver has become a common ailment. It may affect memory, sleep, thyroid, body weight, and other body functions.
Both estrogen and androgen stimulate cell division. Elevated levels of these hormones may lead to abnormal cell growth such as womens’ uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, breast cysts, and breast cancer or mens’ prostate enlargement and prostate cancer.

Since the liver is the principal organ which removes these hormones, its failure to remove them efficiently often leads to their accumulation in the body and is a major cause of the above diseases.

Liver health is related to eye health
The eye and brain cells are especially affected because the blood has to flow against gravity to reach them.

In an article on Alzheimer disease in the January 1988 issue of the Mayo Clinic Health Letter, malfunction of the liver and kidneys was mentioned as one of the causes leading to Alzheimer disease.

Brain tumour, which physically blocks blood flow to the brain, was also cited as one of the causes.

The brain is only 2% of our body weight, yet it needs 20% of our oxygen supply. If the toxin-loaded blood from a weak liver has limited capacity to carry oxygen, the brain cells are affected most.

The liver is the most important organ after the heart. It performs hundreds of functions including:
• Circulation: transfer of blood from portal to systemic circulation, activity of the liver’s reticulo-endothelial system (kupffer cells) in the immune system. The liver stores and regulates the blood and is responsible for nourishing every cell in our body. Every part of the body depends on blood from the liver for nourishment and sustenance.
• Excretion: formation and secretion of bile for digestion and cleansing of blood; removal of ammonia from blood; excretion of substances filtered from the blood by the liver such as heavy metals or dyes.
• Metabolism: carbohydrate, protein, lipid (fat), mineral and vitamin metabolism; manufacturing and storage of many nutrients such as glucose and vitamins; production of heat through metabolism.
• Protection and detoxification: removal of foreign bodies from the blood (phagocytosis); detoxification by conjugation, methylation, oxidation and reduction.
• Production; formation of urea, serum albumin, glycogen and blood coagulating proteins such as prothrombin, fibrinogen and heparin; erythrocyte (red blood cells) destruction.
• Regulation of hormones: inactivation and elimination of hormones through the bile or urine. Since estrogen and androgen are both growth hormones which stimulate cell division, elevation of their levels in the blood due to the liver’s failure to remove them efficiently can cause their accumulation in tissue. This in turn may lead to abnormal growths such as uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, breast cysts and breast cancer, prostate enlargement or prostate cancer. Excessive estrogen is also the most common cause of painful menstruations.

The liver also regulates body functions which affect emotional and mental activities. In a diseased condition, the liver’s blood storage and regulatory functions are affected and bleeding or clots can result.

When liver blood is deficient, nourishment to tendons and blood vessels is curtailed, the joints become stiff, and muscles become spasmodic and numb. Blood deficiency in the liver may even lead to stroke, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, deafness, fainting or convulsion. When the liver blood is so deficient that it cannot nourish the eyes, night blindness or blurring may result. If the liver is affected by stress or unhappy feelings, its vitality may be repressed and the sides hurt, and hiccups or hernia may develop. The bowels may become constipated and sleep may be disturbed causing nightmare or insomnia.

Turmeric

Turmeric is used to cleanse, protect and support liver function. The liver is said to release toxins by creating bile. Turmeric is reported to increase the production of bile. It is used in Eastern medicine as a blood purifier and to promote a healthy digestive system. Turmeric is believed to protect the liver from harmful toxins in the same way that milk thistle can. It is also believed to be one of the strongest anti-inflammatory spices.

Yellow Dock
Yellow dock is used in Eastern medicine to cleanse the body of toxins by cleansing and rejuvenating the liver and supporting a healthy digestive system. It is used to treat liver conditions such as jaundice and hepatitis. It is known as a blood cleanser and is also used to stimulate the production of bile. Yellow dock is also reported to help with treating a variety of skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.

Gentian
Gentian is a bitter herb that has been used as liver tonic and digestion aid for centuries in the east. It is reported to increase the production of bile and act as a stimulant for the liver to function well and the digestion system to work efficiently. It is used as a blood cleanser and is also used to improve circulation. It is also believed to be able to protect the liver from being affected by viruses.

About Cataracts
Cataracts are a common age-related vision problem. About 22 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts, and the older a person gets the greater the risk for developing cataracts. Women are more likely to develop cataracts than men, and African-Americans and Hispanic Americans are at particularly high risk.

Symptoms
During the early stages, cataracts may have little effect on vision. Symptoms vary due to the location of the cataract in the eye (nuclear, cortical, or posterior subcapsular). Depending on the type and extent of the cataract, patients may experience the following symptoms:
• Cloudy vision
• Double or blurry vision
• Glare and sensitivity to bright lights
• Colors appear faded
• Difficulty reading due to reduced black-white contrast
• Difficulty driving at night

Prostaglandins are the main hormones in the body that can increase or decrease inflammation. The body makes them from fatty acids. The type of prostaglandin created by your body (pro or anti-inflammatory) depends on the type of fatty acids in your body provided through your diet.

Your complete DNA sequence will help shape the future of medicine

Prostaglandins are hormones that our body uses to manage the inflammatory processes in the body. Your body produces them from the fats you ingest. Not all prostaglandins are bad, however. Your body produces two different kinds: ones that promote inflammation and ones that inhibit it. If you have arthritis or other conditions negatively impacted by chronic or excessive inflammation, you probably have heard a lot about anti-inflammatory diets and that the foods you eat could affect prostaglandin production.

Diet to reduce pain, cyst, and other conditions such as sciatica, endometriosis, pain-related disorders
• anti-inflammatory (less pain) function
• promotes less estrogen (endometriosis and sciatica pain grows with estrogen)
• builds up the immune system

However, knowing what not to eat can make a significant difference in the way an endometriosis sufferer feels. In fact, endometriosis diet is about eliminating foods that increase negative prostaglandins, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostaglandin F2a (PGF2a). Negative prostaglandins stimulate estrogen, which is the main hormone that wreaks havoc in an endometriosis sufferer.

What you need to include to reduce inflammation
• Your diet needs to contain fiber rich foods, lots of fruits and vegetables that will prevent constipation.
• Oily fish such as salmon, sardines, herrings and mackerel, and halibut rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
• Moderate amounts of grass fed beef. Fresh pineapple, berries of all sorts are anti-inflammatory aid healing and also enhance the immune system.
• 2 – 3 cups of green tea per day with its fabulous anti-oxidant properties
• Turmeric, garlic, ginger
• The B vitamins are highly important and can be found in green peas, spinach, navy beans, nuts, pinto beans, bananas, sweet potatoes, whole grain fortified cereals and breads and unpolished rice and legumes. Use supplements of B1 and B12 especially or a B complex (including all 8 B vitamins) vitamin if you are not including enough of them in your diet. B12 is needed by the body in small quantities but it is essential. It is not found in plant sources (except for seaweed) so if you do not eat any animal products at all you will need to make sure you take a good B12 supplement.
• Foods rich in Vitamins A, such as dairy products – milk, cheese and yogurt, carrots, dark green leafy vegetables, orange-coloured fruits, e.g. mangoes and apricots, fortified margarine, eggs, mackerel and other oily fish. The beta carotene that helps the formation of vitamin A in the body can be found in general orange or yellow fruits and vegetables but some green vegetable s where the tell tale orange pigment is hidden by the presence of chlorophyll. These are broccoli, apricots, carrots and sweet potatoes.
• Vitamin C is found in fruits – especially citrus, regular and sweet potatoes, cabbage, spinach broccoli, tomatoes, and green and yellow vegetables.
• Vitamin K sources such as broccoli and spinach, alfalfa, vegetable oils and cereals.
• Drink plenty of water. Your body needs adequate water to function at an optimum level. Adults need between 1.5 – 3 litres a day.

Increase Good Fats
Along with removing the source of inflammatory prostaglandins from your diet, you may also use products to reduce their production, such as fish oils (EPA/DHA in capsules or liquid) and the herb turmeric, throughout your cycle. Turmeric is best taken on an empty stomach to maximize its natural anti-inflammatory effect.

Increase Fiber
Ensuring proper fiber intake may also help bowel function. High fiber foods include whole grains like oatmeal and rye, lentils, chickpeas, vegetables and fruit. You may also want to consider a fiber supplement. Fiber intake, as well as the use of antibiotics, affects bacterial balance in the digestive tract. If you have taken antibiotics in the past or consumed an abundance foods containing sugar, you may benefit from supplements containing probiotics such as acidophilus and bifidus. Probiotics are the healthy type of bacteria living in our digestive tract. They are essential for the production of certain vitamins and healthy immunity. If you experience digestive upset along with your menstrual pain, or on its own, probiotic supplements taken daily on an empty stomach may bring you some relief.

What you need to avoid• Inflammatory foods, animal products: Cut out all animal products in the first two weeks except fatty fish.
Food items that will result in prostaglandins that are more prone to increase inflammation are a high use of Safflower oil, Sunflower oil, corn oil, Sesame oil, margarine, vegetable shortening and partially hydrogenated oils this includes products made with these items – check your labels!
• Stress and stressor foods: As one of the causes of sciatica can be stress, the result of which the hormone levels become elevated and released through nerve endings so you need to avoid ‘stressor’ foods such as caffeine (again check the labels caffeine crops up in a lot of products), processed foods, carbonated drinks, refined sugar and chocolate. Alcohol and smoking cigarettes also produces a stress reaction in the body.

Diet Tips
1. Eliminate processed and prepared foods that contain trans fats. Trans fats are vegetable oils that have been chemically altered to increase shelf-life and freshness of food. You can find them in fried foods, fast foods, shortening, margarine and any packaged product that names partially hydrogenated oil as an ingredient. Trans fats also naturally occur in milk fat, beef and other animal foods explains the American Heart Association. This might be due to digestive processes of the animals; if you eat these foods you cannot completely avoid this type of fat.
2. Cut back on vegetable oils high in polyunsaturated fat recommends integrative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil. Your body uses these fats to create pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Problematic oils include but are not limited to corn, safflower and sunflower oil. Most commercially produced snack foods contain these oils.
3. Increase your intake of healthy fats that increase the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and reduce the formation of pro-inflammatory ones. Beneficial foods include those rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like fatty fish salmon, tuna and mackerel. Eat walnuts, flaxseed, whole soy foods and hempseed. You can also find many products fortified with these beneficial fatty acids that normally do not contain them such as eggs. Cook with olive and canola oil.

About Sciatica
Sciatica can occur suddenly and be totally and painfully debilitating and a new experience to you or maybe it’s a reoccurring issue that you have lived with for years, suffered the pain and discomfort, put up with the disruption it causes to your life, popped varying amounts of anti-inflammatory over the counter medications and wait for it to ease up? Nutrition is a powerful tool you have on your side.
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It begins at the lower back and travels down the buttock and the length of the leg. Problems in the lower back can cause compression or irritation of this nerve and cause sciatica. This type of sciatica is an inflammation problem. Another cause can be piriformis syndrome which is a muscular problem with the piriformis muscle tightening and placing pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica Types
Inflammation sciatica
Put an ice pack on your lower back/bottom for about 10 minutes before bed. If this helps ease the pain your problem is quite likely to be one of inflammation.

Piriformis syndrome
Put a heat pad on your bottom for 20 minutes before you go to bed. If the pain is better/reduced significantly in the morning it is likely you have a muscular problem. Check for exercises you can do to stretch out the piriformis muscle to help ease this problem also including magnesium rich foods into your diet will help such as dairy products, fish, meat, seafood, apples, apricots, brown rice, and lima beans. Also make sure you have enough B-12 in your diet.

Causes of inflammation causing sciatica can range from a bulging or herniated disc (putting pressure on the spinal nerves), constipation (a surprisingly high number of sciatica sufferers manage to alleviate their pain by altering their diets to avoid constipation that they didn’t realise they had), nutrient deficiencies, infections, diabetes, thyroid disease, metabolism imbalances, gout, alcohol, direct injury/trauma and also stress.

Other tips
Don’t slump! Take steps to improve your posture and strengthen your core muscles to prevent recurrences of your sciatica. If your sciatica is not food related be sure to see a doctor to investigate the other possible causes.

Foods to avoid in Endometriosis and Sciatica
1. Red Meat
Meat promotes negative prostaglandin PGF2a production. Red meat may contain growth hormones that include estrogen. If meat is your main source of protein, you can obtain the protein you need through other protein-rich foods such as chemical-free fish, organic or free-range chicken, beans, walnuts, cashews, chestnuts, sunflower seeds, flaxseed and sesame seeds.

2. Saturated fats and oils
Foods that are high in fatty acids stimulate the production of negative prostaglandin PGE2 and PGF2a. Fatty acids are found in saturated fats, oils (coconut oil, palm oil, etc.), butter, margarine, lard, organ meats, and fried foods.
Fried food, margarine and hydrogenated fats stimulate negative prostaglandins; they should be avoided.

3. Sugar
Sugar, in all forms (refined, artificial or natural) produces a more acidic environment within the body that can encourage the inflammatory pain of endometriosis. Therefore, limit the consumption of any food with high content of sugar, such as chocolate, sweeteners, drinks, sweets and honey to the minimum.

4. Wheat
Wheat contains phytic acid that can aggravate endometriosis symptoms. Wheat contains gluten and studies have found that many endometriosis sufferers appear to have gluten sensitivity which can cause an increase in painful symptoms. Studies have also shown that 80% of women who took gluten free diet have reduced painful periods. Therefore, products containing wheat and gluten such as breads, cakes, pasta, and so on should be avoided or limited.

5. Soy products and Soy Protein Products
Like wheat, soy contains phytic acid; however the levels of phytic acid in soy are considerably higher than wheat. High levels of phytic acid in soy are known to irritate the digestive system and reduce assimilation of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. Soy products also contain high levels of phytoestrogens, toxin which seems to be particularly detrimental for women with endometriosis. Soy phytoestrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and promote breast cancer in adult women. Soy is found in many food products including granola, pasta, imitation meat, soy milk, soy yogurt, soy based cheese, etc.
Exceptions are fermented soy products–tofu, tempeh, and miso. The processing method used by traditional Asian to make this fermented soy products get rid of most of the toxins and make the beneficial phytochemicals more available in the body. Tofu and tempeh are a nearly complete protein and as such are an excellent alternative to meat in a balanced meal. Miso stirred into hot water with a strip of kombu or nori seaweeds is a rich source of minerals.

6. Caffeine
High consumption of caffeine has been found to increase estrogen levels, which can trigger endometriosis flare ups. Hence, caffeine-rich foods to avoid with endometriosis include coffee, tea and soft drinks. Coffee is a known phytoestrogen. Since it is a phytoestrogen, decaffeinated coffee may still be able to act as an estrogen. Consuming more than two cups of coffee a day may cause estrogen levels to raise.

7. Alcohol
Optimum liver function is essential for clearing out excess estrogen which in return helps to control endometriosis. Overconsumption of alcohol is best known for causing the liver damage where the liver will swell with acute intoxication, sometimes painfully, and will show fatty infiltration and enlargement. Alcohol ingestion also interferes with vitamin B12 absorption. Eliminating alcohol from the body stresses the liver and this hinders it from expelling other toxic such as excessive estrogen from the body.

8. Dairy products
Dairy products should be avoided as they stimulate the production of negative prostaglandin PGE2 and PGF2a, which can worsen the endometriosis symptoms. The primary dairy foods that you should avoid with endometriosis include milk and cheese. To fulfil calcium requirement for the body, other good sources of calcium are sesame seeds, almonds, salmon, sardines, seaweed, figs, and calcium fortified foods such as orange juice and oat milk.
Note: When substituting dairy products such as pasteurized milk with soy milk, don’t forget that soy can also aggravate the endometriosis symptoms.

9. Refined carbohydrates
Refined carbohydrates also encourage the inflammatory pain of endometriosis. Examples are white bread, cakes, noodles, pasta, flour, pastry, etc. Most of their natural nutrients have been removed. Refined carbohydrates deplete the body’s nutritional stores as they are needed in order for the body to absorb the nutrients in the refined carbohydrates. This can also lead to increased endometriosis symptoms. A better substitute is unrefined carbohydrates such as gluten-free wholegrain breads, pasta, brown rice, potato, kumera (sweet potato) etc.
Note: When substituting refined carbohydrates, remember to look for gluten-free (wheat-free) products, as wheat can aggravate endometriosis symptoms.

10. Additives and preservatives
Processed, frozen and pre-packaged foods should be avoided when following an endometriosis diet as they are full of additives, preservatives chemicals, and many other ingredients that promote ill-health and negative prostaglandin PGE2 and PGF2. These additives and preservatives aggravate inflammation and worsen the menstrual pain.
• yeast in the backery product
• yeast in Chinese steamed bun

Yeast
Some women have reported to achieving great health improvements by following a diet to address Candida yeast infection. I happened to be one of them. Donna Gates, in her book, “The Body Ecology Diet: Recovering Your Health and Rebuilding Your Immunity” has shown strong connection between endometriosis and candida yeast overgrowth. I did the questionnaires in this book, and found out a lot of similarities between my endometriosis symptoms and the symptoms of candida overgrowth in one’s body. A study by the Woman’s Hospital of Texas examined 50 women with endometriosis and found that 40 women showed bacterial overgrowth. After eight weeks of candida diet, significant reduction in symptoms was achieved. Yeast foods to be avoided are breads, Chinese Steamed bun , bagels, pretzels, muffins and sugars.

Torn ligaments, injuries in bones and tissues

Injuries, whether to soft tissues or to the bones in the ankle, require certain nutrients to heal quickly and to heal completely. From the outset of ankle injury, the body experiences first the inflammatory phase, complete with swelling and heat, the proliferative phase, where the scar is developing, and finally, the remodeling phase where the tissue regains its strength. During each phase, specific nutrients can enhance the healing process and expedite return to play.

For my 53 yr old male friend who plays soccer and injures his ligaments often, I have listed the following supplements for protection and healing. Please eat more fish, yellow foods or sulfur containing foods such as garlic, onions, greens and Vit C rich foods (berries, papaya, pineapples). Since you are prone to allergies and eye problems, also take Vit C, digestive enzymes, zinc, Vit B, coconut water or aloe vera juice, potassium for adrenal function and Vit E.

And most important, warm-up with a dance or brisk walk before heavy soccer play and stretch after.

About Leucine
Leucine is utilized in the liver, adipose tissue, and muscle tissue. In adipose and muscle tissue, leucine is used in the formation of sterols, and the combined usage of leucine in these two tissues is seven times greater than its use in the liver.
Leucine is the only dietary amino acid that has the capacity to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. As a dietary supplement, leucine has been found to slow the degradation of muscle tissue by increasing the synthesis of muscle proteins in aged rats. However, results of comparative studies are conflicted. Long-term leucine supplementation does not increase muscle mass or strength in healthy elderly men. More studies are needed, preferably those which utilize an objective, random sample of soceity.

All about wrinkles, anti-aging regimen

Of course everyone ages, but the way in which your skin ages is very much under your control. Here are 4 lifestyle changes you can start to make right now:

   1. Get your beauty sleep…on your back. Over time, a nightly face plant into your pillow will cause those pillow creases to become permanently etched into your skin. Train yourself to get off your side and sleep on your back.

2. No smoking, or quit if you do. It makes you look a decade older than you actually are. Smoking breaks down collagen, impairs wound healing and restricts blood vessels, resulting in sagging, sallow and course skin.

3. Don’t drink from a straw. The puckering associated with drinking from a straw has been observed to increase wrinkling around the lips.

4. Keep those eyes covered. Sunglasses are a must, everyday, no matter how cloudy it is.
