Skin and nerves need Vit C, A, D, E, calcium-magnesium and B complex

Neuroscientists at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have discovered how the sense of touch is wired in the skin and nervous system. The new findings, published Dec. 22 in Cell, open new doors for understanding how the brain collects and processes information from hairy skin.

“You can deflect a single hair on your arm and feel it, but how can you tell the difference between a raindrop, a light breeze or a poke of a stick?” says David Ginty, Ph.D., professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins. “Touch is not yes or no; it’s very rich, and now we’re starting to understand how all those inputs are processed.”

Depression is a brain disease

In a genome-wide study, Perlis and colleagues found 17 genetic variations linked to depression at 15 genome locations. In addition to hinting at a link between depression and brain gene expression during development, there was also evidence of overlap between the genetic basis of depression and other mental illnesses. While the genome sites identified stillContinue reading “Depression is a brain disease”

Prostate cancer, Dr Mercola

A Saner, Safer Approach to Treating Prostate Cancer The New York Times article did not mention the option of doing what makes sense while you watch and wait, and it is hard to understand why. There are natural nutritional agents that can help you prevent and treat prostate cancer, including getting lots of sun exposureContinue reading “Prostate cancer, Dr Mercola”

Rheumatoid Arthritis and drugs by Dr Mercola

Safest Anti-Inflammatories to Use for Pain Clearly the safest prescription drugs to use for pain are the non-acetylated salicylates such as: Salsalate Sodium salicylate Magnesium salicylate (i.e., Salflex, Disalcid, or Trilisate) They are the drugs of choice if there is renal insufficiency, as they minimally interfere with anticyclooxygenase and other prostaglandins. Additionally, they will notContinue reading “Rheumatoid Arthritis and drugs by Dr Mercola”

Healthy foods and exercise thin blood naturally, preventing stroke and cancer

There are a number of foods and supplements that are known to thin the blood. These include foods with high amounts of aspirin-like substances called salicylates, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E supplements, and foods with natural antibiotic properties.

Strawberries contain a very high amount of naturally occurring salicylates.
While many Americans have problems with blood clots, it is important to note that blood thinning foods are not desirable for everyone in the population. I have been an easy bleeder all of my life, so I have compiled this list so that I know which foods to limit, in order to keep my blood from being too thin.

People taking prescription anti-coagulant drugs also need to be careful not to consume too many foods with natural blood thinning compounds in addition to their regular medication. One of my relatives is on a prescription anticoagulant drug for blood clots and has had eye hemorrhages from ingesting too many blood thinning foods in conjunction with his prescription medication.

Low Vitamin D Tied to Aging Problems

A new study has found that low vitamin D levels in people over 55 are associated with an inability to perform ordinary tasks of daily life. Dutch researchers studied two groups of older people — one of 725 men and women aged 55 to 65, and another of 1,237 older than 65 — to seeContinue reading “Low Vitamin D Tied to Aging Problems”

Torn ligaments, injuries in bones and tissues

Injuries, whether to soft tissues or to the bones in the ankle, require certain nutrients to heal quickly and to heal completely. From the outset of ankle injury, the body experiences first the inflammatory phase, complete with swelling and heat, the proliferative phase, where the scar is developing, and finally, the remodeling phase where theContinue reading “Torn ligaments, injuries in bones and tissues”

Not getting enough sleep, by Jane Brody

I regret that for most of my adult life, I treated sleep as more a luxury than a necessity. There was always something more to do before I crawled under the covers and turned out the light. I realize belatedly that I might have been more productive — and a lot nicer to live with —Continue reading “Not getting enough sleep, by Jane Brody”
